The streets were almost deserted in this part of town. It set Yuffie on edge as she walked down them, looking at the houses and shops as she passes by them. While she hated how her beloved Wutai had been turned into a tourist trap, she almost-- almost-- preferred that to the listlessness that seemed to cover this part of the city. People stayed indoors or huddled together almost hugging the buildings, giving her slightly suspicious looks as she passed by.
What made it even worse was the distinct lack of kids running around and playing. She'd lost track of how many of them had gone missing at that point. A frown crossed Yuffie's face and she fiddled with the PHS in her hand, debating on whether or not she should try and call Cloud again and see if he'd heard anything about missing kids. How long had it been now since anyone had heard from him?
She shook her head with a sigh and something in her peripheral vision caught her eye. She turned and looked down the alleyway curiously, listening carefully. There was a quiet moan of pain and that was all she needed to sprinting down to where the shaking lump of blankets rested next to a few garbage bins.
"Hey," she said quietly as she knelt on the ground next to what she could now see was a kid. "Hey, kid, you okay?"
All she got was another quiet moan. With a worried look, she peeled back the blankets and her stomach churned at the sight they covered. Open sores covered much of the child's bare arms, steadily oozing a thick black liquid. Yuffie cursed under her breath as she looked back at the kid's face.
"Hey," she said again, shaking the clothed part of the boy's shoulder. "Wake up. Come on, you need to wake up." The boy's eyes just squeezed shut even tighter. "I know it hurts, but you need to get up so I can try and get some of this stuff off you, okay?"
Almost before she could finish her sentence there was a louder noise of pain from the kid and his small, thing body started shaking violently in a seizure. Yuffie reached out to steady him, ignoring the way her hand came in contact with the Stigma, cursing under her breath the entire time. Maybe if she'd had a Restore materia on her she could've done something. Instead, all she could do was sit here and hold onto the kid as he shook and then stilled.
"... kid?" Yuffie questioned quietly when the shakes stopped, dread gripping her stomach as she looked down at the slack face. She shook his shoulder again. "C'mon, kid, wake up." Another shake. No reaction.
She didn't let her hand tremble as she reached out to feel for a pulse on the boy's neck, already suspecting that she wouldn't find one but praying she was wrong. Unfortunately, she was right. With a frustrated "Dammit!" She stared down at the little body for a moment before pulling the blankets up and over the boy's head and, a little guiltily, wiping her hands off on them. Later, once she figured out where it could be buried, she come back for the nameless boy's body. For now, though, she had to wake up.
