This strikes me as odd, because I had a new engine dropped into my Toyota a few years back for just under $1500. Then again, dealership prices should come with a bottle of lube. Try somewhere else.
Consider a personal loan from the bank. That's what Erik did to get his truck. The real problem is your commute, which apparently will be remedied once you move. So I think you should rearrange your priorities to moving first & fixing vehicle second.
Realistically, though, a one day car rental is relatively cheap compared to your other options/needs. That's also within the price range of what once can reasonably hope to bum off friends/relatives on short notice as well.
It's a dealer quote, so it's a little high. It was for a used engine, I didn't get into whether it was a full rebuild or not. The total price including all parts and labor I was quoted was $2956.30.
