I'm not sure if a cooling unit would prevent the dreaded dots.
As an aside, this shit emerged literally a couple of days before Super Mario Galaxy came out,
and I came across a new Wii at Best Buy,
so I bought it on a whim,
and it developed the same problem in under a week!
A very cold week, at that!
So just hope it avoids you.
It seems fairly rare,
but it's the biggest issue the Wii has so far.

the link you posted said that it was caused by bad heat sinks on the gpu, so maybe it's fixed on mine since it's manufactured later?

but mario... well i pissed away the whole weekend playing that. I think i'll put that on hold this weekend and crack open Harvey Birdman. Heh, I can only imagine how retarded that will be!

Crisis Core is finally like, on an official release date calendar???
I've been out of gaming news for too long...
YAYYYYY. My PSP may be getting a lot of workout this spring then..........*fanboybounce*

I agree!
The really ironic thing is,
I actually already own Crisis Core!
It's the Japanese version that came with my PSP,
but the game not being in English is a rather huge obstacle ;-)

However, it is, without a doubt,
the most beautiful portable game these eyes have seen.
I don't think you'll be disappointed!

I own 14 games for the Wii - only 2 of which I haven't enjoyed and one of which I got bored and didn't care to finish (zelda)

The only game for the PS3 even coming out that I am interested in right now are Bionic Commando and Soul Calibur IV

I own 3x as many games for Wii as PS3 (6 vs. 2),
and have spent way more time playing Wii games than PS3,
but if you factor in the other uses, the PS3 is used a *lot* more than the Wii.

I also find the Wii's UI to be obnoxious and presumptuous,
whereas the PS3's is very simple and effective
(and, *gasp*, customizable!)

I am curious as to how an interface can be 'obnoxious' and 'presumptuous'? just because you cannot move the channels around?

and yes the PS3 has a secondary (primary from the sound of it) use, but if the trend continues where people do not buy games but keep buying the PS3 as a blu-ray player (admittedly the best one on the market) - that will continue to destroy Sony's profits, bottom line and share holder confidence.

ps - what's your wii code?

The fact that they're all set up as "channels" is pretty annoying to me ( ... )

Yeah... one of these days I'll write a post
bemoaning how each stage of my life has become progressively more isolated.
I miss all of you a bunch, and I *really* miss the days of large groups
of very similarly minded friends hanging out together,
before adult life took over and grew us in separate directions :-(

I hope you are doing well!
I intend to come back to B'ham as soon as Mummy 3 wraps,
I just don't know exactly when that will be!

My Wii actually started to develop that same problem a few months after I got it. Because I wasn't patient enough to wait for the "Nintendo brand" component cable to come out, I went ahead and bought a third party one. Since I didn't have any problems like that with the composite video, I went back and bought Nintendo's cables. Which seems to have solved the problem, at least for me.

And, uh, is that a 2D protein gel on the background of your page? Like for reals?

Swapping the cables was the first thing I tried,
and the problem persisted across two brands of component cable
and one brand of composite, so there was just no way around it for me :-(

And my LJ background is art from NIN's "With Teeth".
It's a bit out of date, I suppose,
but I haven't come across anything I like better yet.

How's Arizona been treating you?
