I think in the hard core competitive environment of the US workplace, other degrees are often devalued. Most of the people I know don't even use their degree in their profession.
Bachelors degrees in things like math, English Lit, psychology, etc are almost useless in the US workplace. To use my psych degree in the field, I'd be trapped in bad environments, a gopher to some PhD. I do use my psych degree now, but in a totally different way.
Nowadays, a masters is almost a prerequisite for entry into a good job in a particular field.
