I had a thought tonight that I felt the need to share. It’s about the legendary bad movie Battlefield Earth, the epic failure to adaptat L. Ron Hubbard’s novel. I could totally write a whole post about the flaws in this film, and prob’ly a separate one about its troubled production history, but that’s not my purpose here ( Read more... )

Wasn't that John Travolta's love letter to Scientology? I heard it was almost, if not worse, than Waterworld and just as expensive.

Speaking of films, I was able to see one of my all time favorite films in a theater for the first time ever on Sunday: The Wizard of Oz. It was such a beautiful experience and all the things I saw int the film that I never noticed before due to the size of the screen and the quality of the print actually made me cry during parts of the film. It's one of the few films that I actually cry during.

I don't know if I would call it a "love letter to Scientology," necessarily, but definitely Travolta had wanted to do it since the Eighties, and the fact that the original novel was by Hubbard might have had something to do with that.
I'm not gonna commit myself on it being worse than Waterworld, but they are very similar films. I would say that the Costner flick was better-made and made more sense, but I think, at gunpoint, I would rather watch this. There are actually a few things about it that are damned near magnificent, but they do get drowned in the tidal wave of shit that is the script and some of the performances (though a couple of actors actually acquit themselves well here).

I cry durig movies all the time. I'm an old softie. Most embarrassing: Major League. When Corbin Bersen knocks Charlie Sheen down and then helps him up, and Rene Russo shows Tom Beringer that she's not wearing a ring anymore, I get a bit misty.
