The Movie Gods Laugh

So there was the Monday Matinee today.

This week there were three movies I was interested in: Selma, Paddington, and Inherent Vice. Selma started too late for me to get to work on time afterwards, so that left Paddington and Inherent Vice. I decided last night upon Paddington, because after years of disappointment I’ve finally realized that Paul ( Read more... )

I have NEVER enjoyed a PTA movie. Don't get "Boogie Nights", thought the way "There Will Be Blood" ended was comically stupid (as, upon reflection, were many earlier scenes in the film) and in "Magnolia" where they all sing together and it rains frogs? What the bloody hell! For all the hating on "Babel" for its take on the combined story format, I though "Magnolia" did it far worse ( ... )

Oh, I'm glad that someone else has the same troubles with PTA that I have.

The Master is actually by far my favorite of his films. The performances by Adams, Hoffman, and Phoenix are extraordinary and some of the camera work is just gorgeous. But I won't add my voice to those urging you to see it, because you don't like him, and even though that's my favorite, I don't like him either. If it couldn't make me a fan, why I would I expect it to make you one?

It truly does make me feel like I'm missing something, and it troubles me. I feel like there's this great vein of pleasure I'm unable to tap. But I guess that's just the way it is. I know people who don't get Cronenberg, and I feel bad for them, but what's to be done about it?

As far as Paddington goes, the trailer did nothing for me either, except to notify me that Sally Hawkins is in it. It really is the overwhelmingly positive reviews, including just Facebook friends who have loved it, that makes me want to see it. Well, that and some residual fondness for the stories.
