I've been trying to figure out why this particular celebrity death matters so much to me, in a way that none has since Jim Henson. Part of it, I think, is that David Bowie was more than his music. I mean, while I love his music I prefer his contemporaries, Pink Floyd. I own many Bowie albums, but all of Floyd's. Probably I listen to them more often ( Read more... )

Nothing silly about that at all. I think you're feeling what a lot of us are. The guy was larger than life and so much more than his music. And he's gone home leaving us a great gift. We've still got that and any time we miss him we can just look up. :)

I really enjoyed yer take on Bowie. When I was in High School (1979-82) I hung out with a lot of heavy metal guys. But there was one friend who shared my love of Bowie and it was always an inside joke for us. A truly tragic loss! I like what your mother said. That puts things into perspective!

My high school was mostly middle-class white kids (into pop), lower-class white kids (into hair metal), and black kids (into rap). It was a little lonely being into The Church, R.E.M., and Bowie (though the metal kids dug Pink Floyd).
