All the key seasonal dates (VE/SS/AE/WS) are approximately the 21st of every three months. They're give or take a couple days depending on how many days per month and leap years. Cross-quarter days (such as Halloween) are halfway between those, and many major holiday dates (like Easter, Chinese New Year's, and Roshhashana - sp?) fall on the New or Full Moons subsequent to the seasonal dates.

Have I mentioned how awesome astronomy is lately? ;)

Halloween may have come from Samhain, which Wikipedia corrects me as falling on the New Moon closest to the cross-quarter day, not the day itself. WP also points out that since c-q days are halfway between the main seasonal dates, and in the US we consider seasons as starting at the main dates, that the c-q days are in effect the midpoint of the seasons. I'm under the impression that in the US we choose the main dates to start seasons instead of to be the middles of the seasons (i.e., although WS is the shortest day of the year it's the *start* of winter, not the *middle*) b/c the atmosphere takes time to heat and warm, causing a lag in the temperature behind the patterns of the Sun.

And don't forget that the First of May, Beltaine, is often associated with fertility rights. Which I'd rather not have right now, but while we're talking about World Orgasm Day it's unavoidable.
