There is MUCH better graffiti out there than those two I listed above, I just don't have the energy to go looking for more. In response to your question, 'Is graffitied public space considered art?', yes and no. The graffiti you posted above is just scribbles, known as "tags". Just names on a wall. Then you have talented artists who know how to use colours to create very smooth and bright images that are pleasing to the eye. Those can be considered art, the other kind, the tag, is a plague on urban society. Either way, I think most people have an opinion on graffiti, just like art, and the day when people turn a blind eye to graffiti is when is ceases to be an art.

Graffiti art poses a good question. From my personal knowledge and thoughts, graffiti art can be considered art. In another class of mine, we had actually touched on this issue/question (is graffiti art considered ART). In a sense, art brings people together. It's a social event so to say. We become fascinated by various forms of art because it can say a lot about our lives (past, current and even our future lives). But because we are so infused with this belief that art isn't really art unless it is in an art gallery/museum, we may disapprove of its worthiness. I never really thought about that being true until this topic came up in another class of mine ( ... )

Great post. Thanks for the photos. Is graffiti art? Of course graffiti is art when it's intention is to be art. The photo you included with the caption that asks the big question..slants your argument or the question posed, because that was "tagging" not graffiti art. There is a distinction. Of course that picture wasn't art it was just words, I doubt that any graffiti artist would call tagging artwork. It's just defacing public property while giving yourself street credibility. When graffiti art emerged in the 70's in the Bronx...these kids (later known as graffiti artists) covered their neighborhood with spray paint in order to "beautify" the already crumbled and ugly streets of their burrough. They wanted some color in their lives. Later when they moved onto painting subways the government in New York decided that each subway would go through a "wash" at the days end and this "wash" would bleed all the pain off the subway cars. This was their solution and this gave birth to the never-ending question of "Is graffiti art?" It is ( ... )
