It's rather funny how we all read a poem quite harshly at times without being so open minded about it. But I agree with you about E.B.B's "Sonnets From the Portuguese - V". With our initial reaction being that the poem is quite sappy, we soon find ourselves indulging into the poem with some admiration. We’ve entered this generation where the “old” becomes a victim of mockery and irony. So I understand your point and summarization of both E.B.B. and R.B. ...But indeed, WHAT A PAIR they are!

Good stuff. Two points: a) the Duke's interlocutor is not the father of the prospective new Duchess but an envoy; b) an Oogly! (a character conveys what they felt? Ouch!)

As Voltaire did not say: SQUASH THE OOGLY.
