Prose poetry, my fine feathered friend. Work that angle first.
I used to find poetry totally impenetrable and grossly self-conscious, but then I learned how to relax about the whole thing. It's now 77% of what I read, I'd say, and I am no poet myself by any stretch. I will say this: I do not read young poets. I do not read anybody who thinks they have anything to say that's so great.
Except Robert Bly maybe, because obviously he thinks he's got a lot of great things to say, except the thing is he does so I let it slide.
I love Robert Bly! He's my favorite american poet..awesome!
Jacky- dude...I'm apologizing ahead of time. I tried posting a response to you in a comment but the comment only allows a certain number of words..I exceeded. I posted a journal entry TO YOU. I didn't have your email address.
P.S I don't agree with not reading "young poets"...I would be weary in doing this with contemporary poets but a lot of amazing poets from the 19th century wrote their best works at ages like 17, 19, etc. Let us go further back and read Milton!...He wrote like a genius at age 14...
