There is no polite way to ... give back a gift you didn't mean to accept, is there?

Generally...No. The only acceptable way would be to honestly explain why you can not accept the gift and return it. (or make up a very good convincing excuse that you are prepared to carry through for the rest of your life)

Yeah ... didn't think so. I'm screwed.

... Thanks for the help.

... I suppose that would depend both on the gift and the person who gifted it.

I assume this involves your work?

Gee, how'd you guess?

It's expensive, unusable, and from someone I probably shouldn't offend. And I still have no idea how I ended up taking it in the first place.

You should think about returning it... you don't want them to think you owe them any favors.

If I could figure out how, I would. Gifts are encouraged, and they're not exactly a problem, for the most part. A new phone with a two-year plan's a little different from a necklace or a jacket, though, you know?

Depends. A lot of people can handle rejection. A lot of people can't.

Generally less.

You didn't accept it from a serial killer did you?

There's less than not at all?

If I'm screwed either way, does it really matter? No, just a customer at work.
