i know exactly what you're talking about. there are still smells etched (singed? singed is probably a better word) into my memory of friends houses from when i was a kid, and the spells are always really closely connected to the carpet. like i imagine the smell and i can't imagine it without the carpet, and vice versa.
other people's dirt being mysterious is pretty interesting! i think about how i am accustomed to the level of dirt in my house, and but if it was someone else's dirt would i feel differently? maybe.
living by myself in a biggish house has made me realise that i am very slobby and messy and that this is something i am going to have to work on in life. because i don't like being that slobby and messy, i can't feel comfortable completely in such mess and slobbery. the only solution to this is discipline and habit, but i often feel like i lack a lot of necessary discipline in most areas of my life, and most of the habits i have are bad/ gross ones. hopefully one day this is turn around and i will have discipline and good
