Across the Universe As Told Without Any References To The Beatles At All
by Bobby Evers
Boy: I come from a shipping town in England in search of my father.
Girl: I'm from Middle America. My boyfriend went to Viet Nam and then my brother got drafted.
Boy: My attraction to you is completely physical, however I will call it love.
Girl: Your rambunctious nature and unkempt mullet attract me to you, as well.
Boy: We live in New York in a nonspecific time during the nineteen sixties, in the midst of Johnson's presidency. Let's experiment with psychotropic drugs and show our boobs and butts but still be rated PG-13.
Girl: I take an interest in peace activism, because my brother is in Viet Nam. It is my cause. I won't bother explaining why it's a bad idea to be in Viet Nam, or how we got in it, just that war is bad.
Boy: I'm from England and don't have a cause of my own. It is as if having a cause is more important than having a reason to have a cause. I defy your activism.
Black Man: I'm from Detroit, there were riots. I play in a band now. I won't bother explaining why there were riots, what they were about, and what the lesson to be learned was. I play in a band now. The Detroit riots are just a footnote, like Viet Nam, on the pretty iconongraphy that was the 1960's.
Boy: Your activism is too much for me.
Girl: Your apathy is too much for me.
Boy: I am being deported.
Girl: The peace outfit I volunteered with became militant.
Brother: I'm back from Viet Nam.
Boy: My love is bringing me back to you.
Girl: And mine to you.
Boy and Girl and Black man and brother: Ultimately what we want is love. Love is ultimately what we want.
