NAME: Cassandra Ainsworth, better known as Cassie
CANON: Skins
PERSONALITY: “Space cadet” is a phrase people use often to describe Cassie. She’s definitely not like most girls. She is a bit flighty, with an airy tone to her voice that sounds almost as though she’s constantly daydreaming rather than actually living in that moment. She’s a selfless person who cares very very deeply about people, possibly a bit too deeply. Normal emotions seem to be heightened for her - when happy, she’s amazingly ecstatic, in love, she’s practically consumed by the other person, and in sadness, it’s almost as though she’s constantly drowning. Friends see Cassie as someone they can tell their problems to without really having to give much back in return. They know she’ll be there no matter what, and for the most part, she is. She’s out to have fun and to help other people have fun.
On the other hand, her friends don’t much seem to notice or care about the less sunny attributes of Cassie. She can have problems with addiction, whether it’s to other people, to sex, or otherwise. Her self-esteem isn’t the greatest. She has problems with anorexia, possibly just to see if anyone really notices that she doesn’t eat. When upset, she tends to lash out at others rather than talk about her problems. She’s aware that she’s not quite normal but typically doesn’t do much to try and fix it; fixing her weird quirks would just make her disappear from people’s attention even more so.
HISTORY:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassie_Ainsworth and
http://www.e4.com/skins/profile-cassie.html - Cassie has an insanely intense history. Her parents, Margeritte and Marcus Ainsworth, are a little too busy practically dry-humping each other at every free moment and raising their new son Reuben that Cassie is pretty much overlooked. Outwardly, she doesn’t much seem to be affected by this. Her self-destructive behavior, however, says otherwise. She starts the series by being recently released from a mental health facility after having attempted suicide. Her friend Michelle asks her to sleep with Michelle’s friend Sid in order for him to lose his virginity. Cassie becomes obsessed with Sid; he is oblivious and smitten with Michelle. Because of Sid’s standing her up, Cassie attempts suicide again and is sent right back to the hospital.
Once released, she decides to move to Scotland, at which point Sid decides that he’s in love with her. She moves anyway, but not as soon as she’d planned. She and Sid have a long-distance relationship after her move, but Sid sees what he thinks is Cassie cheating on him via webcam. In actuality, Cassie was staying with her gay friends and was getting their help with a surprise for Sid. Cassie travels back to England to see Sid because his father dies, but Sid is on his way to Scotland to see her, and thus they miss each other. Because of these misunderstandings, he decides to start sleeping with Michelle.
Cassie finds out about this, which sets up a large chunk of her actions in the second series. Rather than being the sweet, slightly spacy girl from series one, she turns into an even more self-destructive person with partying, sex, and drugs. She treats her friends rather horribly during this time, fully intending to make everyone as miserable as Sid has made her feel. Sid eventually apologizes about his mess with Michelle and he and Cassie make up. However, Cassie and her roommate Chris are partying one day when Chris has a brain hemorrhage, which leads to his death. Cassie, almost in a haze, simply packs her bag and leaves the apartment to go to New York City. While there, she gets a job as a waitress in a Times Square diner.
In the realm of Desai, Cassie will be post-America move slightly more normalized Cassie. She’s been in NYC for about a year. She and Sid did connect, but eventually, she decided that they weren’t particularly good together. She’s trying to get herself into a less destructive state, and Sid isn’t really much help; they’ve remained friends, though, as well as roommates. She will admit that she takes a small sadistic pleasure in Sid being the one pining for her rather than the other way around. She’s still got issues with her eating habits, but does occasionally eat random things.
