because hotel ice machine ice isn't solid ice cubes... if you look closely there is a HOLE in the middle of the ice... so all it really is is "ice donuts" or "ice rings" but not a real ice CUBE... the warm liquid gets into the middle of the ice therefore obliterating it.

Geez, I would have been scared shitless! To answer your ice question, I think it's because so many people use those damn ice machines that they are always working under pressure and therefore the ice doesn't sit in there really long like it does at home, so it melts faster. Does that make sense? It does in my head :)
