I've never really heard of Ohio referred to as "northeastern", with the exception of northeast Ohio being historically connected to Connecticut. I've also heard Cleveland compared to New York when considering lifestyles and attitudes.
I have heard of Ohio counted among "mideastern" states, along with Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan.
But as via census, and as via popular conception, we're the beginning of the midwest.
I live in the Connecticut Western Reserve. We're very northeastern/New England culturally, and I get completely thrown off by being lumped in with the midwest. I've gotten more used to it since I started going to school in western Ohio, though.
