Fanfic Masterpost

It was an exhausting night for Ohno and he couldn’t wait to roll around happily on his futon. However, on his way up to his apartment, he noticed that his landlady’s lights were off. Usually, it would be turned even during 9PM, but for the past week there were no signs of her whatsoever. She wasn’t around during the daytime either, greeting neighbors here and there or sweeping the floor free from dust. He had hoped that she would be in today so he could talk to her about the strange photo of her with Nino, but then again it might just be a prank. Besides, he wasn’t that into bothering his landlady and make her worry for nothing.

“I’m home,” Ohno announced as he opened the door and stepped inside of his apartment room. Any second now, he expected Nino to attack him with a hug, but Nino wasn’t there save for his dirty laundry pile in the middle of the room.

He glanced at the wall clock above the TV and saw that it was nearly half past nine o’clock. Nino should have been home an hour before him, but there was no sign of Nino anywhere, not even the lamp hanging from the ceiling, or on the tree outside of his apartment window.

“Phone! Phone!” Chinen blared as he popped out of Ohno’s bag.

He held out his hand for Chinen to sit on and then told the note-persocom to get him through. Seconds later, he heard Jun’s voice through Chinen.

“Jun! Is this about Nino?”

“Did something… happen to NIno? I was worried because he didn’t come in today.”

“What?! Nino didn’t show up for work?!”

“Oh, you mean he’s not there?”

So if Nino wasn’t at the bakery either then… where could he be? Did he get lost on the way to the bakery? Of course not, it was impossible because Nino knew the route to the bakery very well. Also, there was no other place that Nino could go to and it was already getting late.

“Excuse me, Jun, but I’ll have to call you back!” He hung up right away and gently placed Chinen back in his bag…

Meanwhile, Jun was surprised that Ohno had suddenly hung up on him abruptly. Although he barely knew Nino, he hoped that he would be okay, and for Ohno’s sake as well. With a worried sigh, he turned the open sign to closed and grabbed the open displaying the menu from outside his shop. He noticed that the dark clouds loomed over the sky and he worried even more about Nino and Satoshi. Sighing yet again, he turned around and walked back in the bakery, unaware that Inoue was watching him with a worried expression on her face from afar…

Ohno ran around the city in hopes of finding Nino within the crowd, but unfortunately he was not fit to keep up. He walked towards chalk board sign outside of a the bookstore and rested his arm on it as he caught up with his breathing.

“I can’t find him anywhere,” Ohno gasped for air, “I’ve checked the whole apartment complex and every place around the city where I’ve taken him.” Not even Chinen could find Nino anywhere with his navigational skills. Then the images Okamoto had given him flashed in his mind and he had hoped that whoever sent it didn’t have anything to do with Nino’s disappearance… But thinking about it now, wouldn’t it be possible? The thought itself sent shivers through his spine and he hoped, wished, and prayed that Nino must have made some mistake of some sort instead of being kidnapped.

He looked up from the floor when his breathing regulated and noticed that it was still open. Although he had already checked the place three times, he still went in and walked directly to the new released books display. On it, he saw the picture books that Nino was collecting and saw that a new volume had been released. On the cover, there were two different color bunnies but were identical to each other and they were standing on a path leading to a city. Curiously, he picked it up and flipped through the pages.

”I do know I want it to be smaller,” the lighter colored bunny said as it stared at its identical directly in front of it. “But then the same thing would happen again.”

“It won’t be the same,” the darker bunny said. “This person isn’t that person. It’s someone else. People are all different.

“Even if people look the same… they’re all a little bit different. No two hearts are exactly the same. That’s why the same thing won’t happen again.”

“Then is that person the someone just for me?” The lighter bunny asked.

“I don’t know. But… I’m starting to hope that he is.”

The lighter bunny grabbed onto a star from the night sky and held it closer to its chest. “In this place that this person brought me to… little by little… little by little… I’m beginning to hope that… I can start finding happiness.”

The darker one held up a hand. “But someone will come to stop it. Someone will come to prevent me from finding the someone just for me.”

Ohno closed the book and grabbed the other volumes beside it. He realized something, after reading it with Nino and reading the current one:

“This book isn’t just about persocoms. It’s about me and Nino!”

Strange as it may be, everything, every dialogue and the plot of the book related to them no matter how many times he looked at it. So then there’s definitely someone watching them! Fear overcame Ohno and he began to worry and panic about Nino’s whereabouts. Whoever was the author of these picture books, for sure he would find out who’s watching them and what they want from him and Nino.

“Excuse me sir…” Ohno looked up and saw the bookstore owner approaching him. “You’ve come in here before to buy those books with your persocom, right?”

“Y-yes!”

“And that persocom whose ears are shaped like a bell belong to you?”

“Yeah! That’s Nino! What about him?”

“It was sometime this afternoon, she was reading the new book in that series. Well… I stepped away for a moment, and when I came back to say hi to him, he had disappeared. And I found this on the floor.”

The bookstore owner handed him a tiny gold cufflink that had the shape of a snowflake engraved in the middle. He immediately recognized it since he’s since it a million times on Nino’s white flannel that the landlady had given them last month.

If Nino had suddenly disappeared without a trace and no witnesses… where could he have gone? Or worse, been taken to?

Okamoto leaned in on his screen and swiped from the left, to the right, then up and down, but he had no luck. No matter how many times he tried to find a way to track the sender of the photo e-mails, nothing worked. “Whoever it is really did an amazing job at covering their tracks,” he mumbled as he glanced to his right and saw Mirei bowing.

“Forgive me,” she said.

“For what?”

“I’m not powerful enough to be of use to you. But…” She lowered her head when Okamoto walked to her side and bent down so he could see her face. “...I was created to be useful to you, and to be unable to carry out your requests--” She stopped when he saw his facial expression, one that she always sees everyday whenever he looked at her: his eyebrows furrowed and his lips formed a small frown.

“You’re useful to me, Mirei. You’re so useful, I wouldn’t know what to do without you…” he trailed off and stared at the marble floor underneath them. He could see a reflection of himself: a desperate and pained kid who knew it was impossible to play with life. That face… he remembered seeing it the day he created Mirei…All of a sudden he was pulled forward. He felt Mirei’s arms circling around him and pulling him closer to her body.

“When you were sad… your sister always held you like this,” she said as she gently caressed Okamoto’s back in comfort.

It felt comfortable to Okamoto, but he pulled away and continued to stare at the floor.

“You haven’t programmed any new data about your sister since my last maintenance check,” she said. “Please enter some more so I can be more like your sister.”

Okamoto shook his head and smiled bitter. “I think… I’m going to stop.”

“What?”

“I’m going to stop entering my sister’s data into you.”

Just as she was about to say something, however, Mirei stopped as soon as she heard ringing coming from within the phone line. “It’s the phone, sir. It’s Ohno-san.”

“Connect me.”

Within seconds, Mirei zoned out and looked back at Okamoto with glazed eyes. “Nino’s missing!” She said in Ohno’s voice. “He’s gone! Vanished! No warning. He just disappeared!”

“You sound serious,” Okamoto pointed out. “Do you have any clue as to where he might have gone? … You already looked everywhere, right? Where are you now, I’ll come meet you.”

“The usual place,” Ohno said before Okamoto hung up. Once the line had ended, Mirei was on her feet and she was grabbing his long coat from the coat hanger beside the doorway.

“I’m stepping out. There might be some things I need to look up. Would you mind coming along?” He asked Mirei as she was helping him with his coat on.

“Of course!” Mirei smiled.

“You always smile like that when you go out with me.”

Her smile widened even more. “Because I get to be by your side.”

Okamoto gasped, surprised that Mirei enjoyed being with him no matter what, even if they were together everyday. But at least, he was glad that Mirei was happy and seeing her happy made him feel happier in return… It’s as if he’s never lost anyone…

“Let’s go,” he said and opened the door for the both of them.

Down below, back at the apartment complex, right underneath Kato’s apartment was where a small beep could be heard. It came from the map on the huge screen before Kato. It indicated Nino’s location, but she promised that she wouldn’t interfere…

Hiroki clicked his tongue as he took off his glasses. On the grid, there was a small dot and he knew exactly who it was, the persocom that he and Kuroki were meant to stop. However this time, he wasn’t at the apartment he and Kuroki were watching over, he was at a different place, somewhere not far from the city. He sighed and moved a little so he wouldn’t wake up Kuroki who had fallen asleep on his chest.

“Well, well, well. Now this is an interesting turn.”
