“Where am I going to buy inexpensive boxers for Nino?” Ohno groaned as he slammed his forehead on the table as soon as he claimed his seat in the classroom. Plus, he was tired because it was all he could think of last night.
“I can barely stitch my old boxers together to share…” Being the only boy in his family, he was forced to wear hand-me-downs from his father. It was always a problem for him because his father’s old boxers broke down after one month of use. After more than one hole appeared, he’d bring it to his mom and she would stitch up together for him. The very first day that he moved to Tokyo, however, he was only allowed to buy one boxers with the money his parents gave him because they said that he still had “durable” ones from his father. It was still durable, but the elastics were starting to become loose.
“Dude!” Someone barged in the classroom. “Ohno, you really are perverted!”
Ohno whipped around, expecting a classmate pointing towards him in disgust and amusement, but it was only Sho. He sighed in relief, but he wished that Sho hadn’t said it out loud. Now everyone was looking at him.
“I-I’m not! I swear!”
“You sound in denial,” Sho said as he claimed the empty seat besides Ohno. “What are you doing here so early? You’re never early.”
Ohno sighed. Where should he even begin? About how he felt Nino’s thing on his leg last night and that was the reason why Nino needed boxers? No, Sho would get the wrong idea. Instead, he told him that he felt like it just because.
“So, what kind of naughty stuff have you found yourself tangled up in?” Sho smirked playfully and gave Ohno a suggestive look.
“Will you shut up?” Ohno clamped his mouth over his friend’s mouth. “It’s nothing!”
When it looked like Sho was going to continue with teasing him, Ohno changed the subject. “By the way, what happened to your laptop?”
“I’m glad you asked! It was a huge ordeal, no thanks to you. It took me two full days to get him running again.” Sho sounded a lot like he was mad at him, but Ohno could tell that he was just trying to control his temper. “Chinen, come out!”
Like last time, Chinen helped himself up from the bag. Once he was out, he jumped onto the table and began dancing as if nothing ever happened to him. “He’s in screensaver mode,” Sho told him as if he read his mind.
“As if I’d let Chinen stay broken!” Sho continued as he threw a dark glare towards Ohno. “All of his data was backed up, but I had to replace his Ram, and the video card was completely friend. I kept the receipts, so you can pay me back.”
Ohno glared back at him, his smile gone and his face expressionless. “You know I’m broke.”
Sho crossed his arms over his chest. “I’ll take what you got.”
“Thanks, jerk,” Ohno turned around so his back was facing Sho. Even his own friend demanded money from him. How unfair was life?
“Oh, by the way, did you meet with that Okamoto kid?”
“Yeah,” Ohno turned to face him again. “Are all junior high kids wired up like that now?”
Sho rolled his eyes. “If they were, I’d go back to junior high in a flash.”
Ohno knew what he meant. If he had been born as a genius like Okamoto, life would have been so much more easier on him.
“So how did you meet Keito?” Ohno asks Sho in curiosity.
“On the internet,” Sho shrugged casually as if meeting any celebrity was as easy as that. “He posted a lot on the custom persocom BBS.”
BBS? Despite all the talk he had with Keito the other day, Ohno was still clueless about what a BBS was. He still hadn’t quite figured out how to get Nino to access the internet.
“And did you find out anything about Nino?” Sho pressed on.
Ohno sighed and rested his chin on the table. “Keito plugged four persocoms into him and they still couldn’t find out anything. Nino’s protected or something. All we found out was that he’s probably homemade, and he has the ability to learn.”
“That’s awesome!” Sho patted him on the back. “You must have found a really powerful computer if you could crash four of Okamoto’s custom jobs!”
“Well of course you think it’s awesome,” Ohno’s head drooped. “You don’t have to worry about paying for her.”
The more Ohno worried of all the things that involved money, his head drooped lower until his forehead slammed the table. “My landlady gave us some clothes. But I still have to buy boxers.”
“You know,” Sho smirked as he poked his friend’s head, “some guys prefer that their persocoms don’t wear them.”
“I know he’s not human, but damn it!” That idea didn’t seem that bad either, but Ohno had morals, human or not.
“So, that’s what you’re all worked up about?” Sho crossed his arms over his chest. “You really don’t need it anyway--”
“Well I have to buy some for Nino. I can’t even afford to buy one for myself. What if he walked around naked and I didn’t have boxers for him?! I can’t even--”
“Dude!” Sho lightly punched his shoulder. “I’ll have Chinen look for a cheap store. Don’t sweat! Chinen, could you do a search?”
“Roger!” the small laptop replied before he closed his eyes. A few seconds later, he opened his eyes and exclaimed, “I have a hit!
“Here,” Sho hands Chinen a paper and a pen, “use this.”
Ohno watched in amazement over Sho’s shoulder as Chinen went to work. The small laptop was drawing what looked like a map, and even added in details. He wondered if Nino could do the same thing, but would that mean he has to teach Nino how to draw? Just the thought of him made him stress out because he couldn’t afford paper and sketching pencils for Nino to use. But it was a good thing Sho and Chinen were helping him since he couldn’t do much on his own.
“Here you go!” Chinen handed Ohno the paper with a huge grin.
Ohno gladly accepted the small paper from his hands, and the after affects of being amazed still lingered. “So computers can write by hand, huh?”
“No, I coulda connected him to a printer,” Sho answered bluntly.
“So, why have him write it out?”
Sho shrugged as he held out his hand and Chinen sat on it. “Oh come on, look at him! He’s cute!”
“I-” Before Ohno could even explain his own opinion, the door slid open and sounds of feet shuffling on the floor can be heard.
It was Aiba-sensei. He had his eyes on Sho and said something, that Ohno couldn’t hear, as soon as he walked in, but when he saw Ohno, he smiled right away. “You’re early too, Ohno.”
“Good morning, Aiba-sensei,” Ohno greeted him along with Sho. “Well, you’re here early. Class doesn’t start for another 30 minutes!”
“I know,” Aiba smiled widely, revealing perfect pearly white teeth. “I had some things to do in the office. You’re early too, Mr. Enthusiastic!”
“Uh, yeah…” Ohno scratched his head. He couldn’t help but stare at his sensei, how skinny his body was through his light clothing, and that smile was so intriguing. Even he could pass as a persocom...
“I hope you did your homework last night! I’m going to call on you, Ohno, for the entire first assignment.”
“WHAT?!” The hair on Ohno’s back stood up. “WHY?!”
Aiba patted him on his back and chuckled. “It’s good for you!”
While the two were chatting, all Sho did was stare at them- especially his teacher. Ohno didn’t notice did, and so did Aiba, and sooner or later, students started filling in the classroom and their conversation was soon forgotten.
\\\♥/// It was nearly 8PM when he made it back home. As soon as Ohno opened the door to his apartment Nino jumped onto him with a happy grin on his face and they both landed on the floor outside of the apartment. Was Ohno glad to see Nino after a long day… He pulled Nino from him and ushered him back home when he heard a few of his neighbors moving behind the front door.
Once they were settled, Ohno handed Nino a simple brown tote bag. It wasn’t that hard to find the store Sho pointed him out to, thanks to Chinen. Turns out, everything in there was cheap so he bought himself and Nino three pairs of boxers each. “Here, Nino! I bought boxers for you.”
As soon as the persocom took out his own pair of boxers, he beamed towards Ohno, wore the boxers on his head and ran around the room repeating boxers. Of course Nino would be clueless as to how to use them and all Ohno could do was sigh as he stared at his persocom running around silly with the boxers on his head.
