Ohno swung his rod back and threw it forward so the line would go further out. Since winter is almost over, for everyday now since New Year’s Eve, he went out on his fishing boat and fished for half of the fishes in Japan. By now, Ohno was sure he’s taken all the fishes Japan needed for a new record he had set for himself back after what happened to him. It’s been 10 years and 10 years were too long to wait for him to comeback.
When daylight broke through the window, Ohno’s eyes snapped open and he snaked his arms around his lover’s waist. Every morning since they’ve been together, his lover slept with a calm expression on his face and Ohno was there to watch that face every morning of his life. From nighttime to daytime, that face was from the person he loved most and he would hate to lose him. However, his hands only grabbed a big pillow that meant to replace his lover’s spot.
Just a couple of days ago, his lover announced that he had gotten a new position. And because of his new position, his lover was barely home and Ohno missed seeing his face from nighttime to daytime. He missed eating dinner together with him, showering or bathing together, and making love on their bed. He didn’t want to blame his lover’s job either, but he wished that his lover wasn’t so skilled so he could selfishly have him to kiss and say ‘I love you.’
But that didn’t keep them apart.
When his lover was offered a week off, his lover came home with a weary expression but he smiled when Ohno came running to him. But Ohno didn’t notice this as he felt a hard tug on his wrist, following his lover to their bedroom. In that one week, they did nothing but made love to each other everyday. By the end of the week, there were packed traveling bags and his lover sitting in one corner of the bed, his head down and sighing a heavy sigh.
“What is it?” Ohno dropped his suitcase and rushed to his lover’s side. “Don’t tell me you got fired and you want to move out just because of that.”
His lover pushed him away slightly causing Ohno to flinch. “It’s not that. I have to leave for a long time and I don’t know when I’m coming back.”
“W-what?” Ohno’s heart dropped below the bottom of the Earth. “W-why? A-are you…leaving me?”
His lover shook his head. “I’m not leaving you, Satoshi. I love you with all my heart but I have to… go.”
“But why?” Ohno sunk his knees on the floor. “Do you love me or your job more?”
“I love you more, Satoshi,” his lover sighed. “It’s just that I need the money to keep us living in this world.”
“Screw the money!” Ohno harshly wiped the tears brimming in his eyes. “I don’t want the fucking money. I want you!”
“Don’t you understand Satoshi?! The only reason why we’re in this mess was because of your stupid mistake a long time ago!” His lover stood up and so did Ohno.
“Oh! So you’re going to bring that up now?! I thought that we were over it?! Wasn’t the deed paid already?!”
“It wasn’t, ok?!” His lover pushed him back, roughly than last time. “I was going to but-”
“But what?!” Ohno pushed his lover back too. “You mean that it was never paid and I’m the reason for all this mess?”
“I didn’t say anything about-”
“Oh shut up,” Ohno pushed his lover out of sight and sat on the bed, his back facing his lover’s worried face.
“If that’s the way you want it, then so be it,” his lover finally said after a long moment of silence. “Now hear me, Satoshi. I will come back though. I will come back when all of this is done and I swear to you. If you don’t run after me, I won’t run after you.”
It was the last thing he ever heard his lover say before 10 years had passed and his lover never told him when he was back.
*Present*
Ohno propped his feet on the rail as he swung his arms to the back of his head, resting until a fish caught his bait. It was dead silent all around him except for the sound of waves, and seagulls making their calls to other birds in their groups.
He watched the clear blue sky, waiting for a plane to pass by him. Every now and then, he kept his eyes, ears, and heart alert for the plane hoping he’s back. But those habits were dying as he found a his current hobby more interesting than waiting at home for the doorbell to ring. Of all the things in his life, the fishes didn’t abandon him and nor do they talk about nonsense into him.
As the day grew darker, Ohno decided it was time to go home. He departed his ship on the port in his own rented area, and sold off the fishes he fished. Since Ohno didn’t drive, he walked home while counting his money and asking himself why he still doesn’t have a driver’s license-but it was a good thing his house was walking distance.
On his way home, a few familiar elderly folks stopped and waved at him, greeting him, and chatting about some news with him. But there was something strange with the news when he heard that there was this rich new folk that was living in their area. Now why would someone rich want to live in a small fishing area instead of Tokyo? Ohno asked himself this, but he let go of the question once he reached his street.
Stuffing his few thousand yens in his pocket, he opened the gate of his entrance and locked once he was in so no one could come and rob him of his fishes. He took his keys out of his other pocket and unlocked the door of his house. Once he was in, he turned the entrance light on and he felt a cold daft across his arms.
“Welcome home, Satoshi,” a familiar voice said.
“Who-”
The uninvited stranger smirked at him. It was the last thing he saw before he blacked out, his head hitting the floor with a soft thump.
