Ohno grinned as soon as he departed from the apartment. It really was sunny as Inoue had predicted yesterday, and he didn’t have to worry about bringing an umbrella. He carelessly walked to the rendezvous, not minding how idiotic he looked to other people. As long as he knows he’s lucky, he didn’t care. He just hopes his date will go fine.

By the time he reached the bookstore, he realized he was ten minutes early. It’s not that he wanted to start early, but he didn’t want her to wait on their first date. It would be rude to make her wait. To kill time, he roamed around the bookstore until he saw it again, the book that Nino had interest in.

Slowly walking towards it, Ohno reached out and flipped the book to the front page. He realized it was another addition to the book since it had a different cover and all.

Though he couldn’t help but flip the pages even more. He found himself reading it, immersed at the wording, and how philosophical this picture book was…

“Just as I feared…“it looks down with its eyes closed“… there’s no one here either.”

Then it looked up, its eyes fully open and dull. All it could see was a building full of them together as if it didn’t exist in their world. “Everyone is inside with them,” it said. “Being with them is like living a beautiful dream.”

“A beautiful dream…” it repeated as it closed its eyes once again, imagining them being happy together“… that no one wants to wake up from.”

“They will grant your deepest wishes.”

“They will do whatever you ask.”

“They will be whatever you want.”

“They can do things you cannot.”

“But…there is one thing…they cannot do.”

Just ahead of it, was a figure. A person holding out their arms as if inviting it. But it turned away without looking back.

“They can never become people. They might look like people, but they are only substitutes. I know this very well because I am… one of them…”

It stopped walking and it flew up in the sky with a star in it’s hands, with its eyes gently closing.

“Today I look for someone just for me. Someone who has love for me alone. Someone who will love me even if I can’t fulfill their wishes.

“But…” it opened its eyes and saw a mirror in front of it. In the mirror, showed another one of it, but more darker and different. “There is another me.”

“The other me asks…”

The darker it opened its mouth, “Does such a person exist?”

“I need…someone whose love for me is true,” it answered the darker one. “I want... Someone who loves me without asking anything in exchange. I hope…”

It stopped talking for awhile realizing that the darker one was reaching its hands out.

“Unless the someone loves me for being me… They’re not someone just for me,” it said after realizing the truth.

“Is this so?” the darker it asked.

“It is,” it replied.

“This someone exist?”

“He does,” it nodded his head in reply.

“If so…” the darker one looked straight at it in the eyes, “…then where?”

“My someone is nearby, I think. Perhaps I already know him.”

“But.. What if that person does not love you back?…”

“Guess who?!” A sweet, yet familiar voice brought him back to the real world.

Ohno gasped in reply, and turned around knowing that it was Inoue. He was so into the book that he almost forgot he was in the bookstore. “Hey, Mao. Thanks for not strangling me this time,” he sighed in relief.

“You’re early,” Inoue smiled. “I meant to get here first.”

“So you were reading a kids book?” Inoue asked him, her eyes fixated on the book in his hand.

“Yeah. It’s pretty weird,” Ohno answered. “I’m not sure if it’s good or what.” To start off, it was a picture good for children, which is also a good start for Nino to learn. But then again, why would someone publish this, when talked about such adult issues that a child will never understand until the coming age. Even though the drawing were cute and all, he wasn’t sure if Nino could understand any of this, since electronics don’t have feelings.

“You surprise me,” Inoue said. “ I never would have guessed you like picture books.”

“It’s not for me… It’s for Nino. He likes the first one,” he explained as the both of them walked to the cash register.

“Nino?”

Just yesterday, they were talking about persocoms, and it occurred to Ohno that he never mentioned his persocom’s name. He must have forgotten, or she never asked him at the moment.

“My persocom back home,” he replied with an honest smile.

After the cashier had finished wrapping the newly bought book, he turned around about to say something when he saw the look on Inoue’s face. It was the same as yesterday. Every time the word persocom came up, her smile would always disappear leaving him with a bad feeling. He liked seeing that cute smile on Inoue, yet it disappears every time the word ‘persocom’ is mentioned.

“So you named your computer Nino?” She asked in a low and quiet voice.

“Yeah,” Ohno answered. Maybe he shouldn’t have talked about Nino, but it was already too late to take the words back. All he could do was stare at Mao, her face downcast.

“So! Let’s get going!” Inoue looked up, that same bright smile on her face.

He was glad that Inoue was the type of person to cheer up after a bad thought, but he was more worried that she wasn’t telling him anything. Ohno believes that she might have had a bad experience with them to make that cute smile of hers to go away.

“Y-yeah,” He responded rather slow to her change of mood.

It was quiet without Satoshi home. Usually, he would always sit next to him while he did something he had no knowledge of. He would learn bits and bits of what Satoshi was doing, and later he would learn them from him. Whenever he attempted Satoshi’s same actions Satoshi always helped him, and laughed when Satoshi pointed out his mistakes. But he knew Satoshi was a busy man so he waited for Satoshi to come home everyday.

As he waited, Nino glanced around the room looking for something entertaining. When he looked further into the corner, he remembered the ‘gift’ that Satoshi had given him. Crawling to the far corner, Nino brought his knees up so the book could rest nicely on top of his legs.

He quietly read those words that Satoshi had thought him a long time ago. Turning page to page, a soft whisper would call out to him. He looked up from the book into the terrace, wondering where he had heard that voice. When he heard it a second time, he gently place the book on the floor and stood up quietly. As the third voice came again, Nino walked into the terrace and jumped lightly a tree bark.

Slowly, he brought his hand to his ears and cupped it waiting for that voice again.

“Who can it be?” Nino asked himself. “Someone is calling me…”

After picking a place for the date, Ohno and Inoue came to one place: the pond. The pond wasn’t that far, but it was a really nice place to be in right now with the sunny weather. Even though both were aware of the sun tanning their skin, the fresh air and the scenery was all that mattered. The both of them entered the waiting train, and a few minutes later they were off.

It didn’t take long before they finally reached the pond. Ohno was embarrassed almost falling asleep in the train, but it was a good thing Inoue was talking the whole time. But he managed to look energized the whole time until they reached their stop. With the picnic basket in his hands, he and Inoue safely ;eft the train to the pond.

As they got nearer, Ohno noticed that there were boats and some were even unattended. He guessed that they could use one of those unattended boats, and so he placed the picnic in one while Inoue sat on the opposite side. After neatly placing the basket in the middle of the boat, Ohno sat down and started rowing and rowing until they were in the middle of the pond.

“Wow~ I didn’t even know this place existed until we checked the map earlier,” He exclaimed in an amazed tone. He really was glad though that they both decided to pick this place.

“Really?” Inoue asked in a curious voice.

“Yup,” He grinned, “I haven’t been boating in years so this is great!”

“I’m glad,” Inoue smiled, her cute aura coming back.

Ohno just couldn’t believe it. He scored a date with the cutest girl all to himself, and it was a beautiful day too. He was already starting to believe his day will be the best so far until Inoue had said something.

He snapped out of his thoughts and turned his head around seeing that he was about to bump into another boat. Just as he was about to row further, he recognized the rower in the other boat.

“Keito!” Ohno gasped. It was such unexpected to see him, since he always assumed that Keito was more of an indoor kid. But it was no surprise when he recognized the persocom sitting opposite of him, Mirei.

“What are you doing here?” Ohno asked him as soon as they made it to the dock.

“It’s the weekend,” Keito rolled his eyes, “I do get out, you know.”

“But judging by your face,” Keito glared at him, “I would venture that exercising is something new to you.”

Ohno didn’t get it at first, but he realized that he was panting so hard. It must have been from the rowing and he haven’t rowed for awhile… He grabbed his hair in embarrassment, knowing that his face was red from all the hard work he had done. It really has been a long time…

“Your friend… she’s a person isn’t she?”

He regained from his embarrassment and looked to Inoue’s direction. She was just sitting on a wooden bench while talking to Mirei with a smile on her face. Whatever they were talking about, Ohno wanted to know but he felt that it was inappropriate to eavesdrop.

“Of course she is! What else would she be?!” He chuckled. Of course with the increase of persocoms, the more they got advanced and the more they looked more human. But humans still existed and Inoue was 100% human!

“I’m glad for you,” Keito turned away before sighing.

“Huh?”

“Nino is a lovely companion,” Keito glanced at him sideways. “I find it admirable that you haven’t become so involved with your persocom that you forget about people.”

Ohno gave out a soft chuckled and nodded his head in agreement. “You’re the last person I’d expect to that…but thanks.”

“Mao was worried about that too,” Ohno pointed out, “That I might prefer my persocom to a real person.”

“And what did you tell her?”

“That computers are different from people.”

“That’s true…” Keito pauses, looks down, then looks up again. “But it’s easy to forget. The more human our computers become… the less we feel the need for true human interaction. But it’s all a façade. Our love is wasted on them.”

“That’s right,” Ohno started to recall the first day they met each other, “When I first met you, you warned me not to fall in love with my persocom…That it would only make me cry. Were you--”

“Speaking from experience? Yes,” Keito faced him a smile on his face. It really wasn’t much of a smile, but Ohno could sense a different feeling behind it. The feeling he gave off was exactly when the middle schooler had given him the same advice when they first met.

His head told him to look to his right and his eyes lingered on the persocom. Mirei was indeed beautiful and cute, but he had a feeling that Keito was talking about her. “You fell in love with Mirei, didn’t you?” He asked him directly.

“What makes you think that?”

“Well,” Ohno tried recalling the times when Mirei was around Keito, “The way you look at her, the way you talk to her… It’s different from how you talk to your other ‘coms.”

“Is it that obvious?”

“Well…yeah! What’s so special about Mirei? You don’t seem the type to go gaga for a cute girl,” Ohno pointed out not realizing what he had said until Keito had gone quiet.

“I mean, uh-- I didn’t-- You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to,” Ohno panicked not wanting Keito to think of him as a rude person. Though he found it a bit true that Keito wasn’t the type since his outward appearance was always so dark, and he seldom smiled. But then again, everyone has their own tastes no matter the looks.

He thought that Keito was going to turn away and scorn him for being rude, but the latter looked him in the eye and smirked. “Do people always tell you you’re a good guy?”

“I…umm…”

“Let me guess, Ohno-san,” Keito sighed while he kept his eyes on his face. “Everyone tells you you’re a nice guy, but at the end of the day, you’re never the guys who goes home with the girl.”

As if Keito was able to read his personality easily, Ohno turned away embarrassed that it was the truth. The sad truth that he can never ever get a girl home, and he hadn’t even had his first kiss. All his years, he had been blaming it all on himself, but he couldn’t help it because his instincts always tell him to be nice. “You don’t have to rub it in,” Ohno grated his teeth angrily.

“I supposed I should tell you,” Keito sighed, “…Two years ago my sister died. She was the only family I had left.”

Ohno didn’t know what to say, but he felt pity for the guy. He doesn’t even know what he’s going through since he’s never lost someone important.

“And so I built Mirei. She’s outwardly identical to my sister, but that wasn’t enough. I programmed her with all my sister’s mannerisms, her likes, and dislikes, anything I could remember.”

Keito smiled a bit-- it was rather sad than a happy one. “It was an amazing success. If you didn’t know better, you would think Mirei was my sister. But behind her actions was none of my sister‘s love,” Keito turned away his back facing Ohno. “To Mirei, everything was ones and zeroes.”

“As her programmer, I should understand that better than anyone. But then she smiles at me… It’s like…” Keito paused and turned his head a little so Ohno could see his sad smile, “…my sister never left.”

“She’s just a computer, I know. There are times when I wish I could forget that. I have fun with Mirei, but sometimes I get sad afterwards. The more fun I have, the sadder I get,” Keito explained, his voice getting deflated every word he spoke.

Ohno now understood why. If Keito hadn’t warned him, he might turn out like him, and his life will be for the worst. Yeah it’s great to have a persocom because of the necessities and their cuteness, but he knows there is no way he will fall in love with one. Besides, they’re just computers.

Nino cupped his ears again, wanting to hear that voice calling for him. He really couldn’t describe it yet since it was so faint and it sounded like it was coming near him. So he looked around him and found that no one was anywhere near him. However, he’s heard this voice before, the night when Aiba-sensei came over, but it was so faint he couldn’t hear it. This time, it was louder.

“Who is calling?” He asked.

“It is me,” the voice answered.

“Who is me?”

“Close your eyes. I’ll send you and image.”

Nino did as he was told and as soon as he closed his eyes, a figure in a long dress stood in air. The figure was a she who was holding her hand out as if she was telling her to follow him. However, Nino found it strange how identical this person was to him. She was a different person and he’s never even met this person that looked like him.

“I am your sister,” the figure smiled, “It’s been a long time.”
