Sakurai Sho was really excited about tonight. For a year, ever today, he had waited for it to come again. And in a hours, he really couldn’t wait to turn ten years old while he received a room full of presents.
While he waited, he made sure everyone, including the whole school, the neighborhood, and even his dog knew the day of his birthday. Which would then make it possible for him to have more toys and more of them with his other collections in the toy room besides his bedroom. If he were to get even more this year, he would need another room just to store them in.
“Sho, honey, help me will you?” Asked his mother as she came in with maids following her.
“Yes, ma’am!” He saluted before following the long trail of maids to the kitchen.
“I want you to instruct the maids this year and tell them what you want for you birthday, OK?” She told him as soon as everything was placed neatly into a row of groceries.
Sho was excited by this. Not only does he get so many presents, but he could also let other people taste his favorite kinds of dishes. Smirking, he pointed to one maid, demanding her to do a certain task before ordering the rest until he made sure the kitchen was a mess. Just as he was about to scold a clumsy maid, he felt a soft tap on his shoulder.
“Wha-- Kazu!” Sho shrieked happily as he bear-hugged his best friend. “Where were you?! I was trying to get a hold of you earlier!”
“Sorry,” his friend apologized. “I got caught up with something.”
“Oh~ What is it?” Sho asked as he and Nino stood up. He looked behind his friend, hoping that a huge box wrapped in yellow and red paper was behind him. To his surprise, there was none. Kazu usually had a surprise behind him whenever it was his birthday, and it was his special present too.
“My mom. Said I couldn’t come over today, but I did anyways.”
“Heh,” Sho laughed half-heartedly, still wondering where his special present was. “That’s so Kazu...”
“What’s the matter?” He hears Kazu ask while he continued to look behind him. “Did I do something wrong?”
Sho immediately paid attention to his friend, not wanting to seem really depressed at the fact that he didn’t bring him a present. Well, at least Kazu’s is enough... This was what he thought before he realized it was time for the party to happen.
During the whole time he closely watched Kazu, the latter did not have a present on him whatsoever. He didn’t even play a joke on him about how he hid his present the whole time. Instead, his friend has this casual look on his face.
“Hey,” Kazu nudged him as the both of them walked to the ballroom, “What’s the date today?”
At this moment, Sho wanted to curse at him for forgetting. He thought that Kazu was escaping from his mom earlier to attend his birthday party, but the more he thought about it, Kazu just did it to spend more time with him rather than his own family. Instead, he did not curse at him but he smiled, afraid that he’ll lose Kazu over a present.
“It’s the 25th,” he mumbled as he walked faster than Kazu.
“Oh... wanna play games?”
Even at the mention of the date, Kazu was not fazed by it. Irritated, Sho ran to his bedroom, ignoring Kazu calling after him. He badly wanted a present from him, and he was really depressed that Kazu, his only friend, did not prepare one for him. As soon as he made it in his lair, he locked it, not wanting Kazu to see him cry.
Out of everyone, his best friend had actually forgotten that it was his birthday. He basically reminded the whole world (which is the whole neighborhood, the farthest he was allowed to go to) that it was his birthday! And yet, his best friend, his only friend had forgotten in. The present didn’t matter anymore anyways. Just at the fact Kazu had no idea what day it was today, made him feel much worse.
“You master Sho!” He heard one of the maids yell from behind the door. “Are you OK in there?”
“Go away!” He cried. “I don’t want to see any of you!”
“But young master, it’s--”
“I don’t even care anymore!” Sho yelled. “Go away!”
“Come on, Sho,” Came Kazu’s voice right after. “Whatever it is, you should go. It seems important.”
“No!”
“Then I’m coming in!”
“Ho--”
There was a loud thud followed by something hard falling on the floor, a groan followed shortly after. Alerted by this, Sho stood up and ran for the door. It’s one thing to be mad at Kazu, but he didn’t want to see him hurt.
“Kazu! Are you ok?!” He asked worriedly as he opened the door and attended to his friend. “Are you hurt?!”
“Of course, I’m hurt!” Kazu hissed. “But that got you to come out. Now let’s--”
“No,” Sho pulled his hand away from Kazu, standing firmly on the ground. “Don’t wanna.”
“But it seems important,” His friend insisted.
“No.”
“Sho...”
“No.”
“But...”
“No.”
“Aww, come--”
“No!” Sho yelled for the last time. Just as he was about to turn around, however, the sounds of people’s voices and footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Oh, how badly Sho wanted to go, but he couldn’t. Not until Kazu remembered what day it was. He was really about to head to his room when he heard his fellow classmates shouting not far from where he was standing.
“Ah! It’s the birthday boy!” One of them, with a raspy voice, shouted. “Sho-san! Happy birthday!”
He nodded a response, not wanting to show them his teared up face. When they left, he was ready to lock himself in his room when a hand caught his arm.
“Sho...”
“Go away,” he choked, pulling his arm from Kazu.
“I’m sorry, I forgot... But I have your present at my house. I can--”
“Forget it,” he mumbled. “It doesn’t even matter anymore.”
“Sho!”
At the sound of his friend’s loud voice, he turned around in surprise. His friend has never raised his voice on him.
“You will go to that party, or I will... I won’t be your friend anymore!”
Sho gasped. He didn’t want to lose Kazu, but being stubborn was just making it worse. Sighing, he did as Kazu told him to do and headed to his room for a change. Thirty minutes later, he came out of his room, expecting an impatient Kazu waiting for him. However, Kazu was not there. He was tempted to go back and lock himself in his room, but he remembered Kazu words as it rang in his ears. Groaning, he decided it was best to attend the party, like Kazu would have wanted him to.
The party was so boring. It was usually fun, but his best friend was missing. He did get a lot of present as he expected, but they didn’t seem at all that important compared to Kazu’s. At least he did get presents this year, again.
He decided to ditch his classmates that were going on and on about this new video game Kazu would be interested in. While no one was watching, he slipped through the hidden back door that only he, his family, the maids, and Kazu knew about hoping that a trip around the maze garden would make him feel better; it didn’t.
Instead, he got lost realizing it was so dark out. Sho began to get scared as the sound of an owl howling echoed into the night. He really must have been stupid to go out in the night that he was too afraid to move from his spot. As another hoot of an owl sounded, a hand touched him on the shoulder.
“Ah!” Sho yelled in horror as he jumped back and fell on the grass. “Please, don’t hurt me!”
“Silly Sho. I won’t,” a familiar voice laughed as the grass beneath him moved.
“Kazu?” He questioned as he got on his feet. “Is that you?”
“Who else might it be, you dummy,” Kazu chuckled, “It’s a good thing I found you.”
“Oh, thank goodness!” Sho breathed as he put his arms around his friend. “I thought I was going to be stuck here the whole night!”
“So you’re not mad?”
Remembering Nino’s cluelessness earlier, he pulled away. “I... don’t know...”
“Is it OK if I can make it up to you now?”
“Well...”
“Please say yes so we can head back. It’s cold.”
Now that he mentioned it, it was cold outside. Sighing, he ended up saying yes. He was about to thrust his hands open, expecting the present to land on his hands but Kazu swatted them away.
“Ka--”
Sho was cut off when he felt soft lips touch his own. A second later, it vanished and without him noticing it, Kazu’s special present was placed on his hands.
“Happy Birthday, Sho!”
“What... what was that for?” He asked, still fazed about having Kazu’s lips on his.
“It’s part of the present. Open it!”
“Right now?”
“Uh-huh.”
Before doing so, he sat on the grass. It was too dark to see, but he was able to unwrap the present, which was surprisingly small. As soon as the wrapping was rid of, Sho grabbed the small box and thrust it in midair.
“What’s this?” He asked curiously as he shook the small box; there was no sound coming from it.
“Open it!” Kazu insisted. “That’s the whole point of opening it so you could find out.”
“But what--”
He still wanted to question Kazu about the present but once he opened it, he saw two small rings shining under the moonlight. It was a strange present.
“Want me to put it on you?” Kazu asked him eagerly.
“Sure?...”
Right after he responded, Kazu grabbed the box from him before taking his right hand. He watched his friend slip the ring on his ring finger before he slipped the other one on his finger too. It was a silver band, but Sho still had no clue as to why Kazu gave it to him.
“You curious?”
Sho nodded his head.
“Starting today, Sho, you’re mine!”
“What?”
“This ring here shows you and I belong together! So therefore, you are mine!”
“...Wha...”
“Ugh,” Kazu groaned before grabbing Sho’s arm. “You’ll understand in the future! Happy Birthday, Sho.”
“Yeah...” He mumbled as he allowed his friend to guide him back to the party. “Thanks, Kazu... I guess...”
When they arrived at the party, no one seemed to notice he had disappeared. However, Kazu held onto his hand throughout the party. He has never done that before, but it somehow made Sho happy. Still, he had no clue as to why Kazu gave him that present.Whatever it meant, he wasn’t mad at him anymore. As long as Kazu knows it’s his birthday, in the future, he won’t be mad at him.
