Sho can’t remember the last time he ever enjoyed his birthday parties, even though it was the most luxurious parties compared of that to his classmates at school. All it’s ever been since he’s grown up was the same thing: random people coming in from invites his parents made him pass out at school, and getting bunch of presents that he really had no use for.

On the other hand, the end of his birthday parties were always the best. Ever since he’s turned ten, when Kazu had given him a ring and a kiss for his birthday, he’s done the same thing since then. It was definitely exciting, yet he was still so confused as ever as to why Kazu gave a ring every time he turned a year older, and a chaste kiss right after. If Kazu keeps this up, he’s going to have a bunch of rings in his box full of presents Kazu has given him.

“Why are you giving me a ring every year, Kazu?” He ask him when his best friend pulled away from his face.

Kazu laughed. “You’re growing, Sho. If I didn’t give you a ring every year, you’d lose a finger.”

“Oh,” Sho breathed in realization, suddenly feeling unintelligent at the moment. “But... why do you kiss me every time you give me one?”

“It’s because you’re mine,” Kazu hummed. “And don’t forget that.”

“I... I still don’t know what you mean,” He confessed even after the past seven years Kazu had said the same thing over and over.

Kazu groaned. “You’re already 17, Sho. You should know what I mean!”

“Sorry,” Sho shook his head. “I don’t.”

“For a smart kid, you’re pretty obtuse about these kinds of situations.”

“Hey!” Sho snapped at the fact that his best friend openly insulted him in front of his face. “Take it back.”

“Nope.”

“Take--”

Kazu ran off before Sho had the chance to make him take it back. It took him awhile to figure out what he was supposed to do until his best friend had mocked him a few yards away. He was soon on his feet, running after his best friend, wishing Kazu would stop running around so much, afraid that the food he ate from the party would come back up his throat...

The party was long over and Kazu had already gone home. All that’s left was to work on his homework so he doesn’t receive a zero the following day. When he made it his room, he sat in front of his desk first without doing anything but to stare at the photo of him and Kazu together.

In the photo, it was the two of them as ten year olds, taken right after Kazu had given him his birthday present. Kazu had a smile so huge on his face that it made his eyes seem so much smaller in the photo. Him, on the other hand, was holding up a peace sign while his other hand was holding Kazu’s hand. Upon seeing this, he lifted his hand, with the ring, to the table.

It was definitely bigger compared to when he was ten, but it was still the same hand that held Kazu’s hand that day. He remembered feeling Kazu’s warm hand against his, and how firm it was holding him as if he might try to run away. Smiling, he closed his hand into a tight ball before pulling out his school bag...

“Lookie over there,” One of his classmates, Narimiya Hiroki, nudged him. “Check the girls out, you can see their nipples even through their gym shirts.”

“Pervert,” Sho silently whispers to make sure Hiroki didn’t hear him. “Where?”

Hiroki pointed towards a group of girls a few feet away from them. Despite the winter weather, they still wore their really short shorts and a plain white shirt with red lines to indicate it was a female's clothing. Well, half of them wore it. The other girls were smart enough to wear the appropriate clothing: full on sweats from chest to ankles.

Sho scoffed. "They're being stupid, just trying to impress guys."

Hiroki clicked his tongue. "But it's good for us. Don't you like it?"

Sho was about to open his mouth but someone caught his eyes. It was Kazu playing a short game of basketball a few feet from where the ignorant group of girls were. When he saw him, he didn't know why he felt guilty for looking at the girls. When Kazu disappeared behind the group of girl, Sho looked back at the girls then at Hiroki.

He shrugged. "I guess."

"Good," Hiroki sighed in relief, "I thought you were a homo for a second there."

“N-Nah,” Sho chuckled nervously, thinking that maybe he might be one...

“What’s wrong, Sho?” He hears Kazu ask him worriedly as the both of them took their seats besides the window during lunch. “Someone hurt you? Cause I’ll beat that guy up for you.”

“Do you think I’m gay, Kazu?” He asked him, ignoring his best friend’s threat.

“Why are you asking?”

“Because you’re the only one who wouldn’t laugh at my face,” He sighed as he sluggishly opened his luxurious bento. Inside of it was a bunch of food he asked his mom not to put it, but it was there. All of a sudden, he lost his appetite. Once he pushed it aside, he looked at Kazu who had been strangely quiet. “Kazu?”

“I don’t know,” his friend finally spoke, his voice sounding a bit timid even though he didn’t look like it. “I’m hungry...”

Kazu did not speak more after as he began eating away, avoiding Sho’s eyes. He knew immediately that he was mad.

“Was it something I said?” He asked him as he tried to get his friend to look at him. “I’m sorry if I offended you or something. But don’t be mad ok? At least answer my question.”

“Eat,” Was what his friend said instead of doing as Sho asked him to. “Don’t starve yourself.”

“But Ka--”

“Eat,” The latter repeated, sounding a bit more tense than before. “I’ll get angry if you don’t.”

“Fine,” Sho finally gave in, wondering why his friend was suddenly acting so weird. Was it really something that I said?

Whatever it is, he ate anyways. The food that his mom had packed for him was great as always, but it wasn’t the appropriate lunch for him since it looks like it came out of a high class restaurant. And because of his lunch, Kazu would always ask him to feed him but today, he wasn’t doing that. Instead, his friend was blankly staring at the empty fields outside.
