In Character Information
Name: Rosalina, protector of the cosmos and mother of the Lumas.
Age: VERY VERY VERY OLD, let's say timeless for now.
Birthday: December 27th (The exact month after SMG's release in Australia? Probably pff.)
Game/Series: Super Mario Galaxy
Staff Member or Student?: Staff member, she'll be the Master Librarian, if this is okay. <3
Appearance:
Rosalina most definitely has an embodiment of elegance in her physical appearance alone. She possesses mostly straight blonde hair that reaches down to her lower back. This hair fans out to the sides a couple of times, once around her bangs and a second time down the middle of her hair's length. Along with the fanned-out ruffles on her bangs, a tuft of her hair falls down in front of the right (her right, not your right) side of her face, veiling her right eye. Her other eye, moderately-sized and showing off a bright, aquatic blue color, is visible through the left side of her face.
Her face and build could be described in a nutshell as very slender. Her face is tiny and somewhat circular, looking quite young for someone of her very (and I mean very) advanced age. Her nose is a small, button-like one, and her lips are quite pink and full. Her body itself is quite thin (not too thin, thankfully), and she weighs a pretty average and healthy weight for a woman of her height. She's a somewhat tall woman, being about 5'8". As shown in the ending of Super Mario Galaxy, however, her cosmic power allows her to grow to a grand size (much, much taller and heavier than that) if she needs it. She rarely does so, though. The only time she recalls needing it very, very much was during the catastrophe caused by Bowser's galaxy created a black hole due to the lack of its Grand Star.
That is beginning to stray off-subject now, though, so we'll move on to the next part:
her voice. View at 1:00. She speaks around or close to that time.
Now here's the most important part, her Steampunk clothing! Her four remaining pieces of wear from Super Mario Galaxy are her crown, her wand, her earrings, and her heels. Her crown is made of silver and was given to her by her mother when she was very young. The crown holds three jewels; it has a red ruby on the front and a turquoise on the left and right sides of the crown. Her crown is also encrusted with a star pattern around every jewel, and even one on the back of her crown (which lacks a jewel). Her wand is made of a plain, silvery handle with a bright yellow star on the top. This star is embued with cosmic magic (which shall be explained later in the app). Her heels are a simple silver, as well. Her earrings are shaped like long, four-pointed stars and are made of gold, unlike the rest of her accessories.
Now we reach her dress. Her dress starts with a black collar made from a suede-like (? Something like that, it might not be the material I have in mind oops, but I know it feels sort of like it) material. This is adorned with dark grey, nearly black lace, and a silver five-pointed star around the neckline. The collar is connected to the sleeves, which both begin below the shoulders (yes, the dress is shoulder-less). The connecting part of the sleeves are deep blue, crescent-resembling threads. From there, the grey-blue sleeves (made of velvet) trail down her arms to her elbow areas, where the ends of the sleeves puff out and end just past her elbows. Connecting to the end of the sleeves are loosely-threaded, translucent purple extensions that nearly pass her hands.
The rest of the dress, like the sleeves, is made of velvet and possess a grey-blue coloring. The dress holds an area below the collar that dips down a little low (but thankfully not a lot to show TOO much, I think?). At the waist of the dress, there's a thick, velvet-y thread wrapped around her and tied up into a bow at the front. The strings of the bow extends down to the lower-middle area of the dress and contain one silver bell each on the bottoms. On the thread, beside the tied area, four bunched up bundles of dark blue strings that are kept together by silver bands fall down the sides of her skirt area. The two closest to the bow have three pieces attached, whereas the two farthest ones have two attached. Finally, at the end of the skirt area (which falls down to her feet), it's ended by some dark blue trim.
Wow I'm bad at these clothing explanations aaahhh.
If you want a picture of her and her dress, well, here it is. \o Personality:
Usual moods: Rosalina is certainly a figure of motherhood, a quality that seems to be the most obvious throughout her demeanor. She strives to bring her children, the Lumas, up with the right teachings and bestow upon them what a mother should: love, care, and a cozy home. She only ever wants the best for her Luma children, spending her life taking care of them and informing them of how they can achieve the best in their lifetimes. She can be firm if she needs to, but never condescending or harsh to her children. She only disciplines lightly for them to understand the message, and nothing more. She prefers to do it this way because she believes that it brings the Lumas up in a way that they are obedient to their mother, and yet they won't be intimidated by her. (That of which they fit to a T! The Lumas adore her more than anyone else, and yet they know that they definitely have to listen to her like children must do with their parents.)
Of course, this transfers onto her personality itself, as well. She's always a gentle being, never once being energetic or full of vigor. When she loves, she does so with all tenderness intended and makes sure not to be too tough. She still, however, will be honest, and let people know if she believes they're doing wrong. She does so to make sure that they can improve on their flaws and really, she does do it to help. She tries not to go too far, though. If someone steals something, for instance, she won't yell at them or snap at them, but rather, try to talk it over. She'd rather know the 'why' and help to correct, and even reverse (if possible), what has happened, hoping to make sure they won't do it again. She does so for the people affected by wrong-doings, as well as the one(s) who caused it.
On a similar subject, Rosalina's also not a violent person. If something bad happens, she'd rather try to resolve things in a peaceful manner over having to use fists and magic. She feels violence is a rash way of doing things, and it should only ever be a last resort. If it comes down to absolutely, positively needing to battle, however, she won't hesitant. If she needs to defend her friends and family, so be it. She shall, and she'll try her very best to do so. She only means to look out for others, after all.
That brings us to another aspect of her: her kindness. She'll benevolently help the people she loves and cares for, as well as make sure their well-being will be alright. She's definitely one of the sweetest people you'd meet, for all she intends to do with her life is focus on others over herself. Sometimes, she can take this a little too far and completely ignore her well-being for another. If someone's sick and the disease is contagious, she'd rather be there to aid them in their time of need than to avoid them and illness to herself. This shows her undoubted selflessness.
In short, Rosalina's a very sweet, mellow person, always willing to help out, even to the point of putting herself last. She's also very motherly, deriving from her caring for the Lumas as their 'mama'. She's an honest person, even when it comes to admitting that someone did wrong. In fact, she'd gladly inform them of this in a calm manner in an attempt to reverse or end what they do. She'd rather talk things over instead of being violent, for that matter. If she needs to fight for the better good, though, she will, but only as a last resort type of thing.
Interaction with others: Rosalina usually seems to be very quick to trust at first sight. Honestly, to a point, she is. If she feels that someone seems to be a nice person, she'll gladly be quick to be his or her friend, and care for them as equally as she would her other friends. She's still not quick enough to put FULL trust on someone, however. She does have some beliefs and happenings from her life that she wouldn't entrust to just about anyone out there (such as details about her mother's death, the happenings of Super Mario Galaxy, and other things). As seen to how long it took for her to completely open up to Mario in the game, she does take a while to trust, but when she's seen her proof that someone's really trustworthy, she will give it.
Interaction with (close) friends: If one would be close enough to Rosalina to be given her full trust, they've likely earned something very special. Rosalina doesn't have very many people that she would confide everything with, but once she has with someone, she knows that she can tell them anything that resides in her mind and heart. If her caring nature could expand further, it would for those under this status. She would defend these people with even her life until the very end, no exceptions at all, even if it meant her own death.
Backstory:
Rosalina was your average Mushroom Kingdom girl, growing up in the land there centuries ago. She was born to a father and mother, and was not an only child. She also had an older brother. She grew up in what was pretty much an older version of Toad Town alongside her family, leaving near a hill with a large tree. That was her favorite area to stargaze and, well, her life was quite lovely for her first 10 years.
However, one day, her mother fell ill. Health care wasn't as advanced back then as it is now, and thus, the 'doctors' of their time didn't know exactly what disease she had. They started treating her and instructing for her to have lots of bedrest. However, she couldn't completely stay away from her family. While she was a little more healthy and the disease was more controlled, she'd sneak home to visit her family and update them on her progress. One day, she visited them and told them, including her precious Rosalina, that she would 'hopefully be cured very soon' so they could stargaze again.
The next day, her mother died and was promptly buried under the large tree that she loved. The family took it hard, but no one did as much as Rosalina. She was entirely devasted and would not come out of her room for a good few months after her mother's death except for eating, drinking, and stargazing. However, for those first months, she couldn't even do so on the hill that she did so at all the time. She was just far too dumbstricken with grief.
She soon began to recover, however, and began to go outside more. About a year after her mother's passing, she had encountered a strange starship that had crashed in a nearby field. What she didn't know was that these events that would transpire from this discovery would be a life-changing experience.
The spaceship held a young star child, a stubby, star-like creature with little eyes staring at her. "What's your name? Are you lost?" Rosalina asked the star child as it shed a tear.
"I'm Luma, and I'm waiting for Mama. She's coming to me on a comet!" Luma replied, showing melancholy. Rosalina immediately felt very sympathetic for the young Luma and decided that she would wait with Luma for its mama. She punctuated this with a cute little pinky swear. She went to her father and informed him of her new friend, which definitely surprised him. A star child? This was insane! She clearly wanted to help it, though, so her father relented and allowed her to use his telescope. She looked into the night sky every night, looking for a comet with Luma's mama, but she never found anything. They searched every day for years (three, to be exact), and yet, they did not find Luma's mama.
One day, Rosalina felt like she was about to give up, telling Luma that if she was to look anymore, she'd grow old soon. She then got an idea- the idea to find Luma's mama in space by themselves, to travel into space. Luma agreed, and thus, after Rosalina told her father and (despite his protests) got some supplies, she headed out into the sky with her friend. They searched and searched, but did not find more than just asteroids upon asteroids.
Rosalina began to grow hungry, realizing that she didn't bring enough jam. She looked back at how she packed everything she needed: the telescope, her stuffed bunny, a butterfly net, bread, jam, and apricot tea. However, she forgot water and exclaimed this, causing the Luma to laugh.
"As long as I have Star Bits, I'll be fine! Want some?" Rosalina began to laugh and agreed. The two reached out of the ship with her butterfly net and retrieved some Star Bits going through the sky. Rosalina tried them. Star Bits tasted like honey.
Soon enough, a beam of light streamed into the window of the spaceship. Rosalina expected to see the sun, but instead, saw a turquoise blue comet. She woke Luma and informed it of the comet, and thus, the two went to it. It was made of ice, brrr! They could deal, though, for it was surprisingly not cold, but rather, it was very warm. They searched all along the comet, high and low, left and right, and yet they could not find Luma's mama. Rosalina plopped down to take a break, just when Luma's voice rang out again. It found a cluster of Star Bits on the ground and was being quite celebratory about it. It also stated that there might be water on there. With that, the two decided to stay on the comet for a while.
One night, Rosalina dreamed of talking to her mother, who was turned away from her and retreating from her. She asked where she was going, to which she replied, "Don't fret, dearest. I'm not going anywhere. I'm always watching over you, like the sun in the day and the moon in the night."
The girl felt sadness overcome her as she hugged her mother and asked, "What about when it rains, and I can't see the sun or the moon?" Her mother thought for a moment before responding.
"I will turn into a star in the clouds and wait for your tears to dry."
Rosalina woke up after that line, her face damp with the tears that fell from her face as she dreamed. The Luma was also awake and noticed the tears, mistakening them for Star Bits. Rosalina told Luma that they were tears, for she was crying over the fact that she'd never see her mother again. Luma sympathized with this so much that it, too, began to cry along with her.
They continued to travel through the comet, and as time went by, Luma's hopes began to fade. Rosalina comforted it and hugged it, telling it that she'd give it a present if it stopped crying. She decided then and there that she would take care of the Luma, and as she informed it about this, she felt a tiny, happy spark within her heart. On the comet, they began to use materials from space junk, as well as tools and furniture buried in the comet, to build parts of a home, including a kitchen, a library, a bedroom, a fountain, and a gate. It was awfully spacious, and both Rosalina and Luma felt that something was lacking.
One day, Rosalina was drinking apricot tea when a planet began to emerge from the stars. From it came a Luma of the same color as her current friend. She was excited over the discovery of another one, and yet they both seemed uneasy. There was silence for a moment, but it didn't last once one of the gaping Lumas spoke. "My mama!" It called out. The other Luma parroted its exclamation. The two began to circle Rosalina, crying out 'My mama!' over and over and over again. They were joined by more Lumas, all of different colors ranging from red to green and everything in-between, and all they all chanted out the same thing. "My mama! My mama!"
Rosalina laughed, wondering what she would do with all of these children. She decided that she'd have to name all of them. The next day, she began to name them all from Polari to Seraphina, from Pluto to Sprinkle, and beyond.
Later on, after they saw their 100th comet, Rosalina wished to see her home planet, and thus, took her father's telescope that she still kept. She looked through it and noticed just how small her home planet seemed from here. She zoomed in the telescope and got a view of a very familiar, grassy hill. She reminisced her times stargazing on that hill, having picnics on that hill, and sleding on that hill, all with her family. And...
"I want to go home! I want to go home right now!" Rosalina began to cry, causing the Lumas to group together frantically. They didn't know what to do. She continued to cry, exclaiming how she wanted to go home to the hill and see her mother again. She shouted that she knew she wasn't watching her in the sky because she was buried under the tree on the hill.
She felt better later on in the day, but on the next day, she began crying yet again. Her first Luma began to try to comfort her, telling her that Rosalina's mama is a part of her and that she'll always be close by. The Luma then exclaimed that it had an idea. It would become a comet, a soaring comet that would propel them on their journey. The Luma then began to soar into the sky, and then plummet back down onto the mass. A bright light poured out of the crater that resulted from this collision. The comet began to soar with its newly-developed tail, and then Luma re-emerged as a brand new comet.
The Lumas explained that their destinies were to become comets, stars, and planets. They all then chorused, "No more crying, Mama!" She hugged them all close, and from that day forward, Rosalina never shed another tear.
The girl soon held a welcoming party for a new Luma, and decided to bake a Star Bit cake with all of her Luma children. She decided then and there that she would be the mother to these Lumas, to protect them and help them grow until they were ready to leave the nest. She would then see them off with a smile, because that's what a mother is happiest about. That night, the girl felt a soft, blue light envelop her, one that reminded her of home. She decided then that it would be nice to visit her home every one hundred years to sleep in her favorite nook, and with that, the power of the cosmos delivered her many more years to live with that glowing star magic. Every one hundred years, the comet flew by Rosalina's home planet for her to look down on the planet she called home.
During one visit, as she watched down on what was the town she lived in, Bowser began to approach the Comet Observatory. To Rosalina's dismay, he attacked her and the Lumas, defeating them and stealing the Power Stars and, even worse, the powerful Grand Stars, throwing the Comet Observatory into a state of darkness. As she mulled over how in the world they would retrieve them again, she watched the spectacle of Bowser lifting Princess Peach's castle into the sky, effectively kidnapping her. She watched as the man in red, Mario, was attacked by a Magikoopa and sent to a small planet.
Three Star Bunnies took Mario to Rosalina, who informed him of the peril the observatory was in without the stars. She requests for him to return them to the observatory, to which he agrees to after she gives him a Luma to aid him. He went along with his journey, and poor hopeful Rosalina stood by at the observatory, telling him information of things he encountered along the way (such as the Prankster Comets and such). After getting the Grand Stars (save for one last one), Rosalina was able to propel the Comet Observatory into the center of the universe, where Bowser's Galaxy Reactor lied in wait.
Mario defeated Bowser in his new galaxy and rescued the princess, along with the last Grand Star. However, without the Grand Star powering the sun of his galaxy, Bowser's sun underwent a supernova and turned into a supermassive black hole. The Mushroom Universe begins to get sucked into the hole, and all just about seemed doomed. That is, until the Lumas, including the one that accompanied Mario, flew into the hole and neutralized it. The black hole was about to explode.
Rosalina, still in the observatory as this all began to happen, used her magic to protect all of the universe as the big bang occurred. The universe practically recreated itself as the planets and galaxies flew all about the skies.
Mario awoke floating in front of her amongst the cries of many new star babies. Rosalina had this to say:
“Do you hear the baby stars? These newborns will grow up to become galaxies someday. When stars die, they turn to stardust and scatter across the cosmos. Eventually, that stardust reforms to create a new star... And so the cycle of life continues. But the cycle never repeats itself in quite the same way. So you'll see...”
Rosalina traveled back to the green planet in Gateway Galaxy after the recreation of the Mushroom universe, which now experienced its new beginning. She uttered, "I will be watching you from beyond the stars," before heading back to the observatory. She remained there for a little while more, but not for very long. Something life-changing was just about ready to happen.
Canon Standing:
After Super Mario Galaxy and after the Mario universe was nearly sucked into a black hole, but saved thanks to Rosalina and the Lumas.
The Calling:
Yet another day approached Rosalina and her Luma daughters and sons. They went along the Comet Observatory, doing the usual- stargazing, reading, baking, and other such things. They enjoyed themselves throughout their time, giggling and enjoying the starry day as they did their business and munched on Star Bits.
However, today would be very different from the usual. A strange mouse-like creature had approached them from what seemed out of nowhere, causing Rosalina to quickly become alarmed. She didn't want to fight him, that was for sure, but her mind immediately went to the safety of her babies. She soon realized that the mouse named Mickey did not mean any harm. In fact, he came to give her a grand opportunity. He had heard of her library within the Comet Observatory and her knowledge with handling books. He decided that he wanted to hire her as the Master Librarian of Zenithia, the castle in the sky and a source of balance in the universe.
This reminded her very much of her own Comet Observatory in numerous ways and yet, she wasn't sure about leaving the Observatory and the Lumas. That was when her advising Luma, Polari, told her that he would watch over the Observatory and the Lumas, making sure that they would be alright while she was gone. Besides, she could see the Lumas and allow them to visit Zenithia, yes? She'd be in the cosmos, sort of, just in an entirely different place.
After plenty of thinking, she decided to go to Zenithia. She was somewhat hesitant, but hopefully, it would be alright, yes?
Anything Else?:
- She'll usually have at least one Luma along with her. She won't have multiple Lumas with her at one time (as to avoid too many NPCs), but rather, just one generic Luma at a time.
- Favorite stuff, that's fun! She can gladly most kinds of food (she has no favorite for she loves many kinds, but she has a fondness for cake), but she'd much prefer to have them with Star Bits. She's far too used to eating Star Bits over the centuries now, so she probably couldn't stop. Her favorite drink is tea, hands down. Her favorite color is blue like the night sky.
- Her hair is ~completely natural~. How? Nobody knows ooowwweeeo.
- Despite her wearing a crown, she's not necessarily a 'princess', per se. She watches over the cosmos and is the mother of Lumas, which is nothing related to nobility. She just... has one. It makes me wonder why some people consider her a princess, but to each their own?
- Her favorite possessions are her old telescope (that was once her father's) and her stuffed bunny that she owned since she was but a young child.
- She quite likes reading. It's not her favorite thing, per se (her favorite things to do are ... well, anything with her Luma daughters and stargazing), but she does love it.
- Her family consisted of her father, her mother, and her brother. All of her family is dead by now (her mother died first when she was but a little girl) and Rosalina has outlived them all. This is because the power she gained from her time in the cosmos has allowed her to live for many, many years (although she is certainly not immortal).
- Her special abilities! She's able to protect herself with a bubble forcefield and can float in mid-air, just like the Lumas. She can also expel star magic from her wand, which can be stronger on starry nights (keyword being starry), but less powerful during the daytime or cloudy nights when the stars are not visible. In space, her wand retains its stronger ability (while she is outside, it's weaker inside because of the lack of star shine falling down on it) under the star since the stars are always visible.
In Character Example Post
Zenithia, a castle hanging in the cosmos to keep balance and prosperity reigning in the universe. It is a valiant cause that I would definitely commend and aid with, for it is something that I wish for, as well. My position as this facility's librarian will hopefully help with the students' will to learn through books, and perhaps even the faculty's need to read alone. Passing on knowledge is an important concept, and one I intend to uphold to my utmost ability.
I am the mother of the Lumas and the watcher of the cosmos, and my name is Rosalina. It is a pleasure to be here with all of you, and I hope I will be of help to the people here. I only wish for the best in the universe and the people, and my purpose here, however small, will be fulfilled to the best of my ability. I wish to help, and that, I hope I shall do.
If I wish to the stars and try my best, I may accomplish as much as I want to, not for me, but for everyone. I could only dream for that. I hope my children will be proud of their mama. I have them in my heart.
