...How about a friend? I can bandage a cut as well as the next schoolmistress.

[ her concern is evident. ]

[ there was the sound of a quick scribbling -- anne shirley certainly is the type of young woman to keep an address book. ]

Do you have room-mates, Mildmay? If so, then I should probably pack extra. I would hate to leave anyone out.

Yeah, lady called Kay. Don't worry yourself over it; I don't eat much.

Oh, well. You have not yet had my muffins, have you? They're Marilla's recipe. I know it by heart and though I had to settle for butter that did not come from the Barry's farm, I believe they still turned out marvelously.

...Well, uh. We'll see, then. Sure they'll be great.

'Fraid I can only darn socks and fry eggs in thanks. Can't bake worth-... Can't bake, me.

[ there is a delay -- a slight delay, as always, as she pieces together the things that mildmay has said. she never cares to ask him to repeat himself...it seems a little rude.

thankfully, she has spent many a lesson as a schoolmistress in avonlea coaching the annunciation of a dozen young, lisping children. her patience in this matter is a little astounding.

so, eventually: ] Oh, you needn't thank me at all. I fear that those I live with will soon be tired of the same old muffins and you will probably be doing them a favour by taking some.

[This is a kindness that, compounded with the embarrassment of earlier, Mildmay would be thankful for, were he aware of it. Though, were he aware of it, he'd likely be just as embarrassed to need it.]

Don't like to be ungrateful, all the same. I'll think of something.

...Thanks, Anne.

Would an hour be a suitable amount of time to wait for the physician to arrive and be on his way? Or perhaps two hours would be better. Unless by then, you have supper plans. I would so hate to impede.

...Two hours is probably good, I guess. You won't impede or nothing.

[Two hours later, Mildmay is not fretting, precisely, nor is he tidying up. Currently, he's ignoring his hand in favor of sitting on the sofa and surveying the rest of the apartment, mentally picking out everything in it that someone could possibly disapprove of.]

[He's also waiting for the sound of anyone coming near or knocking on the door.]

[ and eventually there is a very prim little knock on the door. anne will be waiting outside dressed rather appropriately for a young woman of her time; hat and all. a covered basket hangs easily from the crook of her arm. ]

[Mildmay gets the door without might fuss, letting her in quickly out of ingrained habit. And then wishing he'd allowed himself to untie his hair, so he could pull the trick of putting some of it in front of his face. But it's too late now, and so he can only mumble a bit and hold out his hand to shake.]

'Lo. Nice to meet you proper, I guess.

[Stop thinking bout the scar, Milly-fox, she's likely doing enough thinking bout it for the both of you.]

[ having seen it the once over the journals, anne is at least a little steeled for this moment. she does not gasp and she does not step back but her eyes do flicker along the length of the scar. a couple of years ago and she would have launched immediately into a long winded discussion of such a sight. asked him all about it. hypothesized on stories and causes. but marilla has had some calming effect on her and she maintains some impressive self control.

anne smiles and holds her little basket out. ] Hello, Mildmay. The feeling is quite mutual, I can assure you.
