My mother, who is a very basic computer user at best, got a top of the line HP Pavilion around X-Mas 2004. I used it thrice on trips to visit her, mostly to set up a scanner and scan photos at our family reunions. She used it but very occasionally(a dozen hours a year tops). Finally it bogged down and got too slow for her so she went out and got a Sony Vaio(against my recommendation)and on her trip in September gave us this 17" WXGA+ 3.0Ghz Pentium 4(Not M) desktop replacement. Albeit a bit aged, but still damn great specs. Used it sells for $1200 still on the web. We turned it on once and the thing was so Norton Crappified that yes...It was terribly slow. It sat for two months as I worked on more important things. Jessica was excited to have a laptop and we had idears for it.
So, last night I finally got bored and pulled it out for the second time. I could have reloaded it, but it honestly had some great software that wasn't easily(or rather legally) replaced. So I spent 4 hours uninstalling crapware, Norton, etc and sped it up a decent bit. This morning I turned it back on to do disk cleanup and let it go as I left for work.
Tonight I come home and it had of course gone to sleep... The screen never woke up. I've partially disassembled it, checked cables and seatings. The backlight still comes on and is dim-able, but the image itself stays black. Maybe its a defective LCD cable, maybe but doubtful its the inverter, but most likely my new albeit slightly used laptop died in its sleep.
Pavilion, we hardly knew you. RIP 2004-2009. 200 Hours of use tops.
