I knew that jealousy was a strong feeling, but this time, even stronger; so strong that I even stopped talking to my best friend. The worst thing was that he mentioned Sungmin…
It all happened in school. Eunhyuk and I walked slowly to our school. I didn’t know if Eunhyuk was walking slowly intentionally, or he was still sleepy that he doesn’t want to move. Whatever it was, we walked next to each other. Normally I wouldn’t walk with someone I was angry at, but this was all about Eunhyuk. It was a silent trip, no exchange of words during the whole walk thing. It didn’t bother me at all, for the first time. Time to time, Eunhyuk would open his mouth to say something, but close it as soon as he sensed that I didn’t want to talk.
We were already in school, and he never asked me what was wrong with me. When we were by the locker, he just asked me what we had for the 3 periods of classes. I just closed my locker and walked away, leaving him all confused. He ran towards me and grabbed my wrist, but didn’t hold it strong as someone would. I just shook his hand off and continued to walk without saying anything.
In History class, I sat far away from him. To be honest, it wasn’t that far, Kibum was between us. Leeteuk sat next to me for the first time, while Kangin sat behind me. Next to Kangin was Yesung, who was behind Kibum. In conclusion, it looked like a reunion because we were not just classmates, we were friends. The only one that looked off the group was Eunhyuk; he looked like if he was left alone. So the class was like this:
-Pay attention to the class.
-Ignore Eunhyuk; let him wonder why I’m ignoring him.
-Take notes from the teacher.
-Ignore Eunhyuk again.
-Help a classmate with some questions.
-Ignore Eunhyuk while helping this classmate.
-Eunhyuk grabs my wrist with an apologetic face; I shake his hand away and go back to my place.
-bell rings. I leave the classroom quickly.
During the change of class, I looked back to see if Eunhyuk was chasing me or not, but he was too busy talking to Ryeowook. Ryeowook had his brilliant smile pasted on his face. I didn’t care what they were talking about, not even the reason why Eunhyuk was talking to Ryeowook cheerfully. All I knew was that I was too angry. Leeteuk approached me behind and looked at me with a worried expression.
“Is there anything bothering you?” he asked me as we entered English class.
“Um… no.” I said with a smile. “Why?”
“It’s just… you seem out of place. Your expression was blank a moment ago.”
“Ah really? I just slept like 3 hours, maybe that’s why.”
“What? Just 3 hours!? I sleep the double hours of what you do… What did you do to get only 3 hours of sleep?”
“Nothing at all, I just couldn’t sleep.” In reality, I was wondering for the whole night… why Eunhyuk wouldn’t reply to me. “Anyways, I have a question. How would you feel if someone ignored you for the whole day? Especially Kangin.”
“I would die. It’s just horrible if someone you know ignores you for the whole day.”
“And what would you do if that’s the case?”
“I would ask what the matter is and obviously, solve it.”
“Oh… I see.” That’s what Eunhyuk is trying to do, just that he doesn’t ask… he waits me to give him the answer already, I thought.
The day passed like the speed of light. Classes were boring, too boring that I didn’t notice that they finished soon. I sat with Kibum and Leeteuk in recess, listening to their conversation about this sport, Tennis I guess. It was weird to listen to Kibum and Leeteuk talk about Tennis, especially when they were not into sports in general. In lunch, Eunhyuk finally asked me if I was angry.
“Are you angry with me?” he asked, again grabbing my wrist. “Did I do something to upset you?”
“Eunhyuk… I was waiting for your reply,” I said looking away from his face.
“Donghae, sorry for that… I’m really sorry. I’m really going crazy, Ryeowook is angry with me just because I ignored him, you’re angry at me, and I’m angry at Sungmin.”
“…Sungmin?” What does Sungmin has to do with all this… it is a lie that he’s mad with Sungmin, I thought.
“Yeah, we were having a conversation through MSN yesterday, and suddenly, he told me something about my friends and so… I was angry.”
So I was right, he was talking to Sungmin while he ignored all my messages. In the back of my head, of all the thoughts, I knew that he was talking to Sungmin, and it lead me to jealousy.
“Donghae, I’m really sorry.” He hugged me. “I won’t do that again.”
“You know what I don’t like about people in MSN? They leave me talking alone. I don’t care if you were talking to Sungmin, but at least, reply.” In reality, I do care if he talks to Sungmin.
When the bell rang, he pulled away from me and waited for me to get the bag and walk together. We walked together towards Spanish class, still in silence. In the middle of walking, I saw Yesung talk to Ryeowook. Ryeowook was laughing at Yesung, probably because of Yesung’s bad jokes. At the end of the hall, Leeteuk was talking to Kibum; Kangin was listening to everything they were talking about. After a few minutes, Leeteuk was already face-palming, while Kibum laughed at any joke Kangin was telling.
In Spanish class, Eunhyuk seemed to be in a good mood. He was talking to Kangin and Yesung. I sat next to Leeteuk and whispered, “Are you free after school?”
“Donghae! Talk in Spanish.” The teacher said. I just nodded.
“Um…. estas libre despues de la escuela?”
[Translation: are you free after school?]
“Um… ah… si!”
[Translation: um… ah… yes!]
“Entonces… um… -sigh- ah! Hoy. Teléfono. Ok?” I said it with the sign of a supposed telephone near my ear.
[Translation: Then… um… ah! Today. Telephone. Ok?]
“Oh! Um… ok!”
After that, we shut our mouths since the teacher told us to copy all the things from the board… and it was a long list of… well, I didn’t know what the topic was anyways. Thanks God, the bell rang, and I dashed out of there quickly. The last class was psychology. I, once again, sat near Leeteuk, to be specific, behind him. Somehow, I felt that I would be okay with being near to Leeteuk since he just spreads this aura of “good.” Before reading the psychology book, I was planning to talk to Leeteuk, but he was busy reading something in the book. He told me to read the page 240; it was about “choosing friends.” It said:
To select a friend, there must be some elements involved:
- Proximity: the closeness between you and other people.
- Likes: sharing interests that are similar.
- Complementary: the opposites attract to each other.
- Attractive: feel an attraction for the person who is pretty than the ugly.
- Reciprocal: the sympathy someone has towards the other and vice versa.
I used those elements in case of my friendship with Eunhyuk. Sure Eunhyuk and I do live near… just that we take different roads, and of course, we are close like if we were connected to an invisible string. Sharing interests? Well… we both like soccer and video games. The opposites attract to each other… I hope it’s not talking about a girl and a guy. Well… what can I say? He talks a lot, and I talk like… probably 10 times per day. He likes strawberries and I like chocolate… yeah, opposites attract. I’m sure Eunhyuk is… handsome for me, I mean, if he had Ryeowook fall over him and I, he is handsome. I do feel sympathy towards Eunhyuk, maybe because of his smile.
After thinking about it, I shook Leeteuk softly, and he turned to look at me with a shock expression.
“You know what… this book is right,” said Leeteuk with wide eyes.
“Well, you’re talking about a psychology book… which everything seems to be true.” I said glancing at the page again.
“I mean… it really does!”
“What it really does?” asked Kibum turning around to see us.
“Go to page 240 and READ.”
Kibum turned his head to see the book and started reading. After 5 minutes passed, Kibum turned back to us and nodded. Later, the bell rang meaning, go home! I put away the book in my bag and walked away from the classroom. Eunhyuk walked next to me as always and asked me if I had fun in psychology class. Remembering the things in the psychology book, I just nodded and recommended him to read page 240. At the gates, I just said good bye to him and left running towards my house.
On my way home, I found Sungmin and Kyuhyun walking as always, on the same road I take to get to my home. This time, it was different. Sungmin wasn’t holding Kyuhyun’s hand, but Kyuhyun was trying to hold his hand.
“Kyu… why would he get angry at me?” Sungmin asked Kyuhyun.
“Don’t worry about him. I’ll buy you an ice cream to cheer you up.” And both of them enter a mart. Seconds later, Sungmin was licking his vanilla ice cream with his happy face. Kyuhyun face happy as well.
They walk away happily, licking their ice creams. I don’t know but… they make me feel a little bit jealous. Sungmin got the most popular guy in school. Kyuhyun seemed to be the one who doesn’t like to be in relationships. Now that they are a couple, they are happy. It’s just impossible that can happen… well, it’s impossible for Eunhyuk and me to be a couple, right?
In my home, I threw my bag on the floor and grabbed the telephone. I dialed Leeteuk’s number, hoping that he didn’t change the number. To my luck, Leeteuk answered.
“Leeteuk, I have something to tell you…” I started, pausing for a while.
“Tell me! I was dying of worry when you told me ‘today, telephone’”
“Well… I…. I…. I… I like Eunhyuk.”
-To be continued-
