I admire the girls so much for continuing with their promotions like none of this is happening. theyre just updating the fans, holding lives, and communicating with fans as normal. i think if they do leave hybe im going to miss the phoning app the most 😩 so much better than bubble. I might finally have to end my boycott and by the newest album releases in case they go out of print
All this has shown me is that the kpop system needs an overhaul. Idols need to be able to get more workers rights and also a union or SOMETHING on their side. It’s sad. I wish the girls well with whatever they choose to do.
I was watching a YouTube video summarizing all that's happened. I had to turn it off bc the male YouTuber(who is Korean and lives there) started slut shaming New Jeans and saying they were playing their defense using 'the honey trap' aka basically making sure they appeal to older male fans sexually. Absolutely disgusting. The Youtuber was like in his 40s, too. He kept saying,'They aren't kids. They are adults so we can talk about them.' as justification to speak so horribly about these young girls. He even said Hani only went to speak publicly in court so that old man fans could fantasize about her and be on the side of NJ.
You're probably talking about Seoulite. Once upon a time he was decent with how he provided a Korean's perspective on different industry news and topics, but this whole saga has definitely made that latent misogyny JUMP right out. I watched some of his early videos when this all began, but he quickly started getting more and more extreme with his rhetoric about the NJ girls and I was dunzo.
I'm not surprised that Hanni's thing didn't go anywhere, but I didn't think they'd dismiss it on a "well regardless of what happened, you're actually not an employee so...skill issue" technicality. I don't know what it would take for reform or unionizing to happen but I think if it were to happen, it would need to be spearheaded by senior idols who have an above average amount of leverage with their companies.
As for MHJ...good riddance I guess. She probably has investors lined up ready to buy NJ out of their contract should the termination suit fail (damn, it's almost like this is all part of the plan she kept insisting would be impossible to do).
Every adult in this situation absolutely failed the NJ members. Whatever happens, I don't see them fully bouncing back, which is a shame. Hope I'm wrong though. As derivative as I find them to be, I can still admit their sound was a breath of fresh air that kpop needed.
it's crazy that there are still people who think MHJ is the victim of Hybe's shady practices (they are a shady company, no doubt, mind you) when she explicitly said this was her plan, to get NJ away from Hybe, before Illit even debuted. I will give her props, she's really succeeded in muddling the waters enough that she's positioned herself as a lone employee standing up to a corporation.
I do feel bad for the girls, they were in an impossible situation there. And sure enough, if my beloved CEO kept telling me the big company hated me and wanted to sabotage me, I'd probably believe her too, especially when I have next to no dealings with them directly and hear everything through her.
