Having read the article, I don't feel very great about McCarthy but I find it distressing that the only person who will have to live with the fallout and discourse of that relationship is the victim.

That being said, sending a McCarthy fanboy over there to Humbert Humbert the relationship, is definitely a normalizing move from VF. That should get way more backlash.
