This score deserved such a better movie. Not to be dramatic but it was such a comfort during a shit time. It’s insane to me he doesn’t have an Oscar.

While Hans is a perfectly valid answer, I think it's a fool's errand to pick any one film composer as the best, because there are so many great ones.

But if I had to choose, it'd be John Williams.

I feel like for nostalgia and thematic factor, John Williams has a lot of composers beat. Not many composers do 'theme' music. Howard Shore for the LOTR films is the last composer that really handled that well in films. I feel like a lot of scores are just atmospheric music and nothing with a theme.

Like, this scene becomes something. Tense, frantic, but then triumphant. Same with E.T:
