Ed Norton Wants Studios to Say Less About What Goes on Behind the Scenes

Edward Norton on why he doesn't want to discuss his prep work for "A Complete Unknown":

"We’re getting so hung up on process and the behind-the-scenes thing that we’re blowing the magic trick of it all. We’re starting to have this tendency to talk about how we did it before… pic.twitter.com/TY4Y1KW6OD

I don't care so much if they show too many behind the scenes clips but they should show less stuff in the trailers.

Yes! I feel like trailers tell you a condensed version of the movie and I have no desire for that tbh

Meanwhile I won't watch the BTS, but if the trailer doesn't tell me what the movie is about, no way I'm getting up from the couch and going to the movie theater. I'll wait until I can read the plot somewhere and watch it on a streamer if I care.

He has a point. Content creation being the main vehicle for movie marketing has killed the artistry of movies a bit. I know y'all will try to take this as an opportunity to shit on influencers, but this is a commentary on movie studios losing the plot.

I’m not a fan of his at all and he gives the impression of being a bit of a tool, but I don’t think he can be called an underachiever.

I think small clips here and there is interesting. I want information to be accessible, but I think because of social media, we have become more inundated with information that people have preconceived notions before coming into an experience. Audiences can't come in with a blank slate anymore unless you've been completely cut off from the internet. It used to be that you watch something/experience something, then if you really liked the film, you get the DVD and the BTS was just a nice bonus to learn something new.

i loooooove bonus features (rip) in part because access to them came after you had already watched the film or the show and consumed the magic of it. getting into the details is a magic of its own. the order in which the audience experiences them is important and can enhance the experience of both.

since they are part of campaigning now, i wish that industry awards shows like the oscars gave them their due during the broadcast. if i were in charge i would scrap 98% of the on-stage bits in favor of video packages highlighting behind the scenes stuff. the awards viewing audience is the same audience for that kind of thing.

I love behind the scenes stuff whether it's a tour of the set, talking to the costume designer, showing the hair/makeup process, etc.

To be honest, I feel like stunts/fights are often the go-to for behind the scenes clips and as much as I respect the work that goes into stunts and fight scenes, a lot of it ends up looking kind of the same in the behind the scenes stuff when they show the actors rehearsing the choreography, which is why it's often the least interesting form of behind the scenes footage unless they're doing something very different (I did always enjoy the behind the scenes stunt stuff shown for Game of Thrones).

But I agree that it would be great to see interesting behind the scenes clips instead of lame jokes during award ceremonies. That reminded me that one of my favorite bits at the MTV movie awards was the year that they had Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo pretend to be crew members who showed what they did behind the scenes. I still remember when they demonstrated the foley stuff and they were so serious and ( ... )
