It was already getting bad pre-pandemic. When I saw the Donna Summer musical, there was a group of six women sitting right behind me who were loudly talking, laughing, and singing along all night like they were in their own private happy hour karaoke booth.
But something about the pandemic broke people's brains and massively inflated their sense of entitlement. After the theaters reopened, singing along was getting so bad that theaters were putting up signs and making announcements specifically telling people not to sing along. Despite that, the production of the Whitney Houston musical had to stop the show to kick people out because they were screaming the lyrics at the top of their lungs. It's fucking ridiculous.
I would like to believe that Dolly fans are kind and polite enough not to do that, but these days you really never know.
We need to normalize telling people to shut the fuck up when they're being obnoxious in public. That's my go-to reaction to that type of behavior and gotta say, it works about 90% of the time. The other 10% I leave up to the venue. I've only had one instance where the venue wouldn't kick them out after multiple complaints, so I literally just left and insisted on getting a refund.
I went to Dollywood and although I like Dolly Parton and all, I feel like, there wasn't much to her story? She had this huge building with an exhibition about her life and it was cute but very impersonal. It showed that she grew up in poverty but there wasn't much else that they touched on besides her "gumption" and performance career. If she's gonna have a musical based off her I would like to see something more than poor girl makes it big.
As a fellow Dollywood enjoyer, SO true. I've not gone since 2004, so no idea how much has changed, but I remember thinking at the time "Boy, it sure is good that Dolly is nice and talented" while watching her little bio stories around the park. But, I think any good writer can make a musical out of nearly anything. Dolly understands the power of embellishment in writing, so I think a lot of things will be played up or heightened (Porter Wagoner!!!).
