watched the following on back to back nights, which made for an interesting (and depressing) pairing
nickel boys: it’s wild to me that another best picture nominee i could name keeps being lauded as the dazzling audacious swing of the season, when this one is a bold take that actually works. there’s such a distinct vision here and i’m very interested to see what ramell ross does next. glad this got into best picture after being on the bubble for a bit.
the brutalist: i appreciated a lot of this on a technical level (score, cinematography, scale, performances) but something about it left me cold. not my least favourite of the best picture nominees, but definitely not at the top of the list. the opening scene is so good that it genuinely might have been my favourite part lol

we’re supposed to have a deep freeze here this weekend, so going to curl up at home. i might try you’re cordially invited for something silly and lighthearted, though it doesn’t look amazing.

I need to see No Other Land.

I saw the trailer for Dog Man before something else I was watching and it's a no from me based on that.

I'm off next week so I will be spending some time watching the Oscar films.

Only a few features left on my Oscars Death Race so I'll probably finally watch both Gladiators this weekend.

After watching A Complete Unknown, I've been on a little Dylan kick and watched both I'm Not There and Don't Look Back. Will probably watch Inside Llewyn Davis next. It's sort of fascinating to watch so much about a figure who doesn't want to be known/nailed down.

They finally added Love Me to my theater yesterday so I got tickets for Sunday.

I watched The Seed of the Sacred Fig earlier this week along with a Q&A with the director and it was so good! [Spoilers]I would describe it as a claustrophobic horror about men's greed for power and control. My bf thought it was a bit too long but I thought the length made sense given we witness the slow unravelling of an abusive patriarch's loss of control both in his personal and professional (political) lives and growing tension and fear of his victims. I read that some people found the allegory to be clunky and a bit on the nose but I thought it worked.

I'm going to see The Flats tomorrow which is a documentary about some of the residents in an estate in Belfast and the generational trauma of the Troubles. It has a low rating on Letterboxd so hopefully I enjoy it.
And then on Saturday I'm seeing Soundtrack to a Coup D'Etat about how the CIA used American jazz artists in Lumumba's assassination plot. I've been looking forward to seeing it for a while now so very excited.
