FILLED: Visible Evidence Pt. 1authoressnebulaApril 27 2011, 01:41:22 UTC
I'm done with work for the day and can now write; that work? :P
---------
It's the tip, tip, tap of the keys that ultimately pulls Dean from his sleep. Not that he was really sleeping. Just closed his eyes for a minute. But the tapping of the keyboard still pulled him from his dozing.
The room is dark save for the bright light shining from the computer screen his brother's sitting in front of. Dean winces at the light, his eyes sympathizing with his brother's that have obviously been up and exposed to the harsh light for awhile.
Again.
The past few weeks, Sam's become more and more obsessed with that damn laptop. Dean finally hid it one night, in an attempt to let Sam get some rest. Sam fidgeted and fussed all night long, so unable to find anything relaxing to do for even one evening that Dean finally gave him the laptop. The relief on Sam's face almost hurt to look at

Two days later, Dean knows they're about to have the same conversation again when he catches sight of the circles under the circles under Sam's eyes. Goddammit he knew the kid wasn't sleeping. Dean should've set his alarm on his phone to wake him up, but the hunt the day before about killed them both (literally) and he'd stupidly thought they'd both crash.
Sam hadn't. And if he didn't stop whatever the hell he was doing soon, he was going to crash in a spectacular way.
"You think, what, the spirit was tired to the staircase?" Sam's asking him now. Dean's fries are getting cold while he's sitting and mentally yelling at Sam, so he ignores the obvious for a moment and chows down

"Sammy," Dean says softly, trying to get the kid's attention. It takes half a minute - not that Dean's counting or anything - before Sam finally tears his gaze away

Time to come clean. "Checking up on whatever the hell's destroying my little brother," Dean says truthfully. "Whatever it is, it's eating at you. You can't sleep, you don't eat...it occur to you that maybe I'm, I don't know, worried about you?"
Sam stops, like it actually hadn't occurred to him. It probably hadn't. "It's...just a small side project," he says, and Dean knows a fudging of the truth when he hears one.
"This is the stuff that's so critical? A side project isn't 'critical', Sam," Dean says, raising his eyebrows. "You're wearing yourself out over old news-"
"It's personal," Sam interjects suddenly, and that actually makes Dean stop.
"Personal?"
Sam fidgets. "I can't look into the past year," he says at last. "And I won't do it, I swear. But it just...it started small, as a way to maybe find some of the people whose lives I destroyed, and then there were so many that I

Awwwww this was so heartbreaking and sweet at the same time. I love how Dean makes Sam finally see that those deaths weren't his fault and he saved so much more people in return.

THANK YOU! One thing I want in canon, so, so much, is for someone to shake Sam (like, literally) and remind him that he did a whole hell of a good thing and saved the world and that they're proud of him. Telling him the bad stuff wasn't all his fault isn't going to help him as much as reminding him that some of the good stuff WAS his fault.
Also, exhausted Sam with circles under his eyes will never not be a good thing.

So my laptop's broken and I'm using a school computer til my dad comes help me fix it tomorrow, so I'm sitting in the middle of the 24-hour undergrad library. And trying my hardest not to cry like a baby, cuz that would be embarrassing. But still, OH GOD SAMMY. He's just....I want to give him a hug so bad, and then Dean gave him a Winchester version of a hug and that actually made me want to cry more than Sam blaming himself in the first place, and...and...I'm gonna stop before I make a fool of myself in the UW library, but this was AWESOME.

I absolutely loved this. The show needs something like this - Sam is far too fixed on what he did wrong to see what he did right, and while Dean is over judging Sam only by his mistakes, he still needs to actually tell his he's proud of him and that he's kinda awesome.
So, thank you for writing this! (Now put it in script form and send it to the CW.)

Damn it. Must be allergies or something. Why else would there be tears in my eyes now *sniff* Very well done. Just like all the other ones you responded to. I admit to not being able to tear myself from reading on long enough to leave a comment *hangs head in shame*

Absolutely loved this! Wish Dean would say something like this to Sam in canon (since he is obviously berating himself and doing penance still). Thanks!!

Angst!Sam does just as well for me as hurt!Sam. And it's just like our old Sammy to go back and do this, finding everyone he did wrong and didn't save. Ahh! Beautiful!
