Dean shook his head. “Real too. Still got that dollar?”
Sam shook his head vigorously. “I do! I remembered you told me to save it for something I really, really want. Daddy’s keeping it for me, want me to show it to you when we get home?”
“No kiddo it’s alright. Who gave you that dollar?”
“The tooth fairy.”
“Right and she has your tooth now right?”
“But Tommy said his dad said... ok.” Sam rambled off, finally realizing what Dean said held truth to it; Dean never lied to Sam before at least Sam didn’t think so.
“Okay, let’s get home huh? Dad will be worried about us.”
“Yeah, ok, but can I ask you one more?” Sam pulled on Dean’s pants leg. Puppy dog eyes pleading with Dean to stop and answer his question. By this point Dean was beginning to get annoyed and a little angry at whomever this Tommy’s Dad person is for filling his sons head with crap thus making his son do the same to Sammy, but, he could never say no to those eyes and Sam knew it.
Sighing Dean replied, “Yes Sammy but last question okay? We really need to get
( ... )
“She’s right here.” Dean patted Sam’s heart, feeling the steady beating underneath in comparison to his own heart’s frantic pounding.
“In my…shirt?” Sam asked confused, staring at Dean’s hand transfixed.
Dean rolled his eyes. “No silly. In your heart. She’ll always be there no matter what. So don’t listen to Tony because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
“His name is Tommy.”
“What?”
“His name is Tommy not Tony silly.” Sam giggled, delighted by Dean’s mistake, making Dean finally relax and unclench his muscles.
“Right I forgot well Tommy isn’t very bright, well at least not in comparison to me, right squirt?”
Sam giggled again when Dean mused his hair, settling an arm around him and pulling him into his side. “Right, because you’re the smartest big brother ever!”
“And…..?” Dean prompted a fond smile on his face. Having been through this string of banter many times before and knowing Sam never failed to deliver the last line with glee and pride.
I purposely left Dean's answers open so the writer could decide whether he'd tell Sam "the truth" or not. Poor Sammy, when he discovers this is just the start of many lies told to shelter and comfort and keep him a kid.
And I love what you did with that last question of Sam's and Dean's reaction. He didn't get mad, even though I wouldn't blame him if he did. Anger can be self-defense and he was completely taken off guard. I love how gentle and focused and caring Dean was in making sure Sam was listening and explaining in terms he could understand. Poor Dean. I wonder if this became just another pain he swallowed down and moved on.
I figured that young, Dean would tell Sam anything as to comfort and shield him from how bad it gets.
I'm so glad you liked it. The subject is rather sensitive especially for Dean, but I imagined that Dean wouldn't get upset over Sam's inquisitiveness even when asking about Mary
Okay, yeah, I teared up. Though it ended on a perfect note that made me smile. The "In my... shirt?" bit was super adorable. It was just... THEM. Just a bit of emotion, based on this thing they share that no one else could understand, and Dean being a good big brother and being able to remember her but almost having to say it out loud to make it feel real. Wonderful fill! *applauds*
