Rapunzel, Rapunzel!  Let down your hair!

basics.

Name:  Una Noirin Fitzpatrick
Age/Birthdate:  23 / March 19, 1984
Occupation:  A new novice serving with the Sisters of Life in Manhattan.  She has to serve as a novice for two years before she can take her temporary vow of chastity, and serve in that capacity for anywhere from three to five years, depending upon how the archdiocese feels she is progressing, before taking her permanent vows and officially becoming a sister.
Tale & Status: Una is Rapunzel from the tale of the same name. She's not particularly secretive about her tale and, if asked, will be more than happy to inform anyone of her tale.

history.

When David Fitzpatrick and Siobhan Kelly married, they always knew they wanted a large family.  David had known Siobhan since childhood and their wedding came as no surprise.  Nor did the first child, who came just past nine months later.  With David working as a firefighter and Siobhan teaching, the family wasn't wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but they were happy.

As time went by, the family seemed to get larger and larger.  There was Ian first, then Fiona, then Aidan and Embry, and finally Una.  As the youngest, Una grew up used to the hand-me-downs of her sisters and, sometimes, her brothers.  With such a large family, money was tight, but they were content.  Besides, with both families having resided in Boston for as long as they could remember, there was a huge network of extended family, not to mention the others from David's firehouse and those from church.

Large potlucks, family birthday parties, and a house full of people was a way of life for Una, as was weekly mass, youth groups, and church camp.  The Fitzpatrick family was very religious and much of their life revolved around church.  As Una got older, she found herself drawn more and more into the religious side of her life.

A hard worker and devoted scholar, it was of no surprise when, at the start of high school, she received a scholarship to Mount Saint Joseph, an all girls Catholic high school.  Una loved the camaraderie of an all girls school.  To her, life was easier without the frustrations of the opposite sex.  It let her focus more on what was important to her - her studies and her faith.

It was during her junior year that she realised she was a tale.  She'd felt for some time that there was something different about her.  Something very wrong.  And this only served as proof.  When she was presented with her Compendium and was told about the Atheneum and the Pentamerone, she was shocked.  The worst realization for Una was what exactly her tale was.  And what she'd done.  The fact that her tale had gotten pregnant without being married in the eyes of God was something that shook Una to her very core.  And, as such, she's felt ever since that it's her job to make amends for this sin.  This is, in fact, how she deals with the issue of reincarnation.  She's convinced the only reason she's here is to repent of her past sins.  God is giving her a chance, in this life, to make amends.

After this realisation, Una started to work even harder, pulling away more from her friends.  Her life became solely about school and religion and, though her parents worried, they thought it was just a phase.  Una had always been a quiet, reflective girl.  Still, for Una, it wasn't a phase.  It was all about a change of lifestyle.  She realised then what she wanted to do with her life, that she'd found her vocation.  She was going to be a nun.

Una realised that an education was important, even when called to join the sisterhood.  It would give her yet another outlet to help people.  So when she got a scholarship to The Catholic University of America, it only helped solidify this decision and it was off to Washington, D.C. for her.  Una had never lived outside Boston.  To be honest, she'd never really travelled much outside of Boston.

School was hard for her.  She'd always relied upon the support structure of her family and it was hard to be away.  In addition, she found that, though the school was a Catholic school, many of the students weren't as religious as she was.  In the end, she found a core group of friends and, though the group was small, they got her through school.  She finished with her nursing degree and was ready to make her way in the world.

Her last year of school had been spent trying to find the order that she felt was right for her and, in the end, it was the Sisters of Life in New York.  Their mission to help in crisis pregnancy situations and post abortion healing spoke to her and she was sure this was how she was to atone for her former sins.  So she packed up the few things she had and headed off to New York, soon settling into the Sacred Heart of Jesus Convent.  It was here that they housed the women who, finding themselves in unfortunate situations, came to the Sisters for help.

It was a year ago when Una first came to the city and she still finds New York to be a strange place, especially when seen from behind the wall of her convent.  The sisters don't watch television or use the internet, so she often finds that she's at a loss when it comes to pop culture references or anything most girls her age know.  She has another year before she can take her temporary vows of chastity and another three to five after that before she can be a full Sister, but Una has begun to question her decision.  More and more the issue of reincarnation comes into her mind and, after so much work, she isn't sure if this is what she should be doing after all.  Whether or not she can devote herself to this sort of life, she doesn't know and she finds herself in the middle of a religious crisis of her own.  What she'll do, she hasn't decided.

about the girl.

Personality:  With an expression that seems perpetually meditative, it's easy to see that Una lives a life of contemplation.  She's of a shy, retiring personality, preferring to stand aside rather than argue.  Much of her day is spent in silence and it's something she finds extremely comfortable.  Still, it can throw someone who isn't familiar with her off.  After spending so much time in silence, Una has learned to express herself better with facial expressions and body language than with words.  Though a quiet person by nature, Una loves people.  She just doesn't always understand them.

Una is a very caring, giving sort of person.  However, growing up in a very restrictive lifestyle, she's still extremely naive to most of what goes on in the real world.  Having never had any sort of relationship with the opposite sex other than a very distant friendship, things of these sort baffle her.  Her closest friends are her own brothers and sisters and, being the youngest, she's used to having someone looking out for her.  When left to her own devices, Una finds herself in awkward scrapes.  She doesn't always grasp exactly what's being said, what with pop culture references completely lost on her.  Her life revolves around helping others, specifically through the work she does with crisis pregnancies and post-abortion healing.  She also tends to work the most with the pregnant women living at the convent, as she isn't bound by the vows of silence yet.

What often comes as a surprise is how athletic Una is.  She loves to bike and rollerblade and spend as much time outside as possible.  Luckily for her, the Sisters find this pleasurable too, so it's not unusual to see a group of nuns rollerblading down the nearby bike paths.  She's the sort of girl who'd rather spend her weekend hiking than most anything else.  It's all about enjoying the splendour around you and, at that, she's a master.

There's a part of Una that wonders if she's always been missing something in her life, especially now that she's older.  Though her entire family is very religious, she's held herself to stricter standards than were required and now she wonders wistfully about things like love.  It's the sort of thought she tends to think of as wrong and do her best to repress.  Still, she can't help but wonder from time to time if she's making a mistake in life, even as she pushes forward.  It's her tenacity that presses her forward, even though self-doubt plagues her.  Not only does she press on, she does it with a smile and grace.  She doesn't give the impression that there are any cracks in her foundation, yet there are.

Likes:  the outdoors, athletics, her religion, sunshine, autumn, snow, baseball (especially the Boston Red Sox)

Dislikes:  hot weather, cursing, fighting, the New York Yankees

Physical Description:  At first glance, the thing most noticeable about Una Fitzpatrick is her hair.  Her long, wavy hair is well past her waist, though it is often worn in a thick braid.  She isn't a short girl, standing about 5'7, nor is she thin.  Growing up on traditional Irish foods and playing sports, she has an athletic build, firmly solid, with plenty of curves.  Her wide blue eyes are offset by dark lashes and full lips, though her nose is a little too sharp to feel perfectly at ease with the rest of her face.  She has a sharper jawline than most, the set just a little bit masculine, but the effect is softened by the rest of her features.  When it comes to style of dress, Una is very conservative, as is to be expected.  While at work, it's mostly scrubs and at the convent, it's usually jeans and sweatshirts.  Only a novice, she isn't in traditional religious dress yet.  It's only when she takes her temporary vows that she joins the sisters in wearing the habit, though a modified form.  When it comes to movement, she's graceful on her feet which she credits her nursing background for.  You get used to moving around machinery and through crowded rooms.  She tends to blend into the background, preferring not to stand out, and isn't one for grand gestures.  She is, however, quick to smile and to laugh.  In general, she's a warm, kind person and it shines through.

Quirks:  Una loves music and often hums to herself.  She can't stand quiet.  When nervous, she often tugs on her braid and, if her hair is loose, will braid it just so she can do this.  In addition, she nibbles on her bottom lip, leading to a chapstick addiction.  While she never wears make-up, chapstick is a permanent fixture somewhere on her person.

Fairytale:  Rapunzel

Ability, if any:  None, but she does possess FABULOUS hair and a very heavy sense of guilt.

Una VS Rapunzel:  Una has a very tumultuous relationship with her past.  In fact, many of the decisions made as a tale have influenced the person she is now.  Growing up in an extremely orthodox Roman Catholic family, she always had a strong sense of what was right and what was wrong as defined by her religion.  The knowledge of her past was and, to some extent, still is hard for her.  In her tale, Rapunzel was pregnant without being properly married in the eyes of God and now Una carries the guilt for this.  As such, she's decided to devote her life to serving Him, in hopes that such a penance will dissolve her past sins.  Still, she struggles with the idea of reincarnation at all and that she could have lived as a tale.  In addition, she fears that none of this is really true and it's some sort of demonic influence trying to bring everyone in the "taledom" down.  While no longer confined to a tower, Una has managed to confine herself behind the walls of her convent.  The physical difference from the world around her makes her feel more comfortable in being able to change her path from that of Rapunzel's.  Still, instead of being pregnant herself, she deals with pregnancy all day, which can be hard at times.  All in all, it's a struggle for her.
