So I went to New York a few weeks ago to visit my mom.
She was there visiting a friend and she wanted to hang out with me for a last time before he new job starts. She will be working between San Diego and Puerto Rico for the next 6 months and then she's moving to PR Permanently.
Here's a picture of her in central Part
we had wanted to go to Central Park but it was rainy. instead we spent most of the day in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and then only walked through the park briefly.
Also last week (starting June 30th and ending July 8th) I was in Louisiana.
I took an offer of free travel over Ford's Shutdown week, and went there to work for Habitat for Humanity. We built 5 houses in 4 days (frames, roof trusses, plywood, tar paper, windows, doors, siding). I was part of the awesome House 3 team consisting of volunteers from Michigan, New York, and Sarasota, FL.
It was Hot. Then it Rained. Then it was Muddy. There had been a drought in the area for 3 months, and it rained 6 out of the 8 days I was there. It was mud all over the place all the time.
After the Blitz build (most everyone left wednesday), we helped out on the remainder of the houses around the neighborhood. stuff was slower and more laid back. I think if I do this sort of thing again I will only go for the main build, and I would get a rental car. having a car is so helpful when you're traveling and in a strange place.
We also got to tour new orleans and go to jackson square and bourbon street. NOLA is still really torn up and the people there really need help. Although the downtown is back to normal, the regular neighborhoods are still a mess and they need help.
Near the end of the week there was a dedication ceremony for one of the houses. The new homeowner was present, and a ceremony including blessings of each room was conducted. It was very nice.
Pictures are forthcoming since I was never able to get my new digital camera to work. Here's hoping that all it needs is a new battery
