Character Name: Sirius Black
Series: Harry Potter
Timeline: 1977; Sirius is 18 and has just received enough money from a dead uncle to properly buy his own place.

Character Background: As one of the four Marauders, Sirius/"Padfoot" is a character that comes into action far before Harry Potter even is born. Which makes sense, seeing as Sirius is best friends with Harry's father, James Potter. He is described as a good-looking boy, arrogant, mischievous, and accepted in fan-canon as what might have been a playboy. My own interpretation is largely influenced by fandom works such as the shoebox_project due to the fact that Sirius is mostly seen as an adult during the series and is unfortunately cut short during the fifth book, where he dies in one of the hotly-debated scenes in the series (did he die? Is he going to come back?--though, obviously with the completion of the books, we know he is definitely, 100% dead).

Sirius is the heir to the illustrious, pure-blooded Black family, inbred as they come in an effort to preserve the purity of their blood status and extremely prejudiced against anyone otherwise. OF course, Sirius is much the Black Sheep (ha, ha) of the family and shrugs off his responsibilities in favor of mucking about with his pals. To Sirius, blood status is not important so much as the caliber of the wizard, or rather, how awesome (a debatable aspect, gauged by Sirius's discretion) they are. He is a teenage boy at the point I've taken him, newly graduated from Hogwarts and disowned by his family who view his traitorous, non-Slytherin, blood status-ignoring ways as a travesty. He is blasted off the family tree.

Sirius, for the most part, does not care, but there is a part of him that is slightly hurt and bitter and entitled about this, though he would never admit to caring. It is just entirely human that he would.

Sirius is usually defined by his relationships with the other Marauders: James, their leader and Sirius's best friend; Remus Lupin, the voice of reason and their other good friend; and Peter, who is a bit of a wet sock and will ultimately turn out to be much traitorous than Sirius ever was. The Potter family takes Sirius in when he is kicked out by his own and it is safe to assume that he grows very close with the Potters in a brother-family-I-love-you-folks way. When James and Lily get married and have their baby, it is Sirius who becomes godfather of Harry Potter and is framed for their murder because he was the closest and thus the most suspicious. It's a tough lot in life to be accused for your best friend's murder and betrayal, and the years in Azkaban really do a number of Sirius later on in life. But he always puts the Marauders first, and though he has a tendency to poke fun a bit too much, an inability to get serious and sometimes stepping into the realm of the inappropriate, he means well. Sirius is a guy who puts his friends first.

Later on, Sirius becomes something of a guardian for Harry, though it is never made official due to the fact he is technically on the run since escaping from Azkaban. He resumes his position as a member of the Order of the Phoenix. It is during this time that he becomes especially close with Harry and is warned that Harry is not James - it is apparent that Sirius uses his godson as a way to relive the past, even calling him "James" during the Battle at the Department of Mysteries. However, it does not lessen the blow of Sirius's death where his cousin Bellatrix sends him through the mysterious curtain and Sirius crosses the mortal realm into a place where death lurks. The fact that Sirius is yet another person who becomes one of Voldemort's casualties helps propel Harry forward in his journey to eventually defeat the Dark Lord.

Abilites/Special Powers: Sirius is a wizard! Given a wand, he can do a number of fancy things. He is canonly stated to be one of the cleverest wizards in his year. He is capable of performing nonverbal magic and is undeniably skilled at Transfiguration. It is thanks to this latter talent that he was able to become an illegal, unregistered Animagus, his form being a black dog. Of course, considering the fact that Sirius could accomplish this while still being in school points to the fact that he was a powerful wizard.

During the series, Sirius is also forced to duel numerous times and can hold his own against other powerful wizards.
