 You know... the french can be so damn 'indiscret'.  They love posing tactless questions by phrasing it ever so cleverfully.... 'si c'est pas trop indiscret'.  (if its not too indiscreet).  It sort of leaves one hanging... do I answer;

Damn! But I definitely hear ya on the "si c'est pas trop indiscret" thing. I've personally come to the conclusion that it's because we're foreigners - it makes people feel they can ask us things they would NEVER even think about asking a French person. Sometimes if I'm feeling brave, I try to turn the question back around at them, and then watch as they shift around and try to avoid answering the same question they just asked me!

If you're really not worried about becoming further socially ostracised... xel_otath September 4 2007, 16:39:27 UTC
You could play the "Yes, I am a jackass American" card and ask them if the reason they feel compelled to invade the personal lives of foreign citizens through social nuance is because their nation has proven so powerless to defend itself from invasion. It's a bit more redneck than I'm usually comfortable with, but if they've no reservations, why not fight fire with really stupid fire? Sure their nationalist fervor response may look scary, but what is the French PTA really going to do to you?

ROFLMAO!! Although redneck, that's awesome and I think I might try it... or I can tell them I rather enjoy being part of France's 9% unemployment rate.

French PTA? ha.
