Вики сообщает: The city was initially called Villa Holguin, in honor of the then-current president of the country. It is believed the name was changed to Armenia in memory of the Armenian people murdered in the Turkish ottoman Hamidian Massacres of 1894-97 in Western Armenia.(!)

The name Armenia is derived from the word "arme" in anchient mayan dialekt of nawatt and means "the place of pompous turkeys". When the first spanish settlers were passing by on the road to Tazumal they have encountered many native indians whom they requested to show them any birds or animals to be consumed. Nawatts pointed at the nearby dormant volcano and described a black and red feathered bird later known as turkey. Hence the name.
