[The journal is open and actively sketching the deep blue sky. Every few minutes, animated inky clouds drift across the page. Then there is a sudden close up of a paw as it flings out and hits the page, leaving behind a smeary red pawprint-]

[Rao is wandering nearby, gazing anxiously around at her eerily familiar surroundings and wondering for the hundredth time just how she got here. Something moves out of the corner of her eye - she turns, and gasps. All day she had felt the strange absence of Ryoshima wildlife, but there on the shore is....some kind of animal, yes! And by the looks of things, it's hurt badly.

Never one to let others (even wee beasties) suffer if she can help it, Rao hurries toward the creature, slowing down as she nears it - primarily to not scare the poor thing, but also out of shock. She's never seen a fox this big in her life!]

[Ninetails stirs weakly as the woman approaches, one red eye opening long enough to identify the source of the soft footsteps padding though the sand before closing again in tired denial. The heat of the infernal sun must have finally made her hallucinate - there was no other explanation for seeing that face again....unless this accursed place was where the dead went. At that thought, the dull pain in her head flared up, making her snarl softly.]

[Naively thinking that the fox is just agitated by her close presence, Rao ignores the snarling and speaks in a quiet, soothing voice.]

Poor dear, you must have gotten into one heck of a fight.....have you been out in the sun all this time?

[Rao reaches out her hand. She knows from long experience that even strays can't resist a good petting.....although she's forgetting that this is a giant fox, not a hungry kitten.]

[She feels the cool hand touch her head gently and she immediately takes a vicious snap at it.]

. . .

In a world that presents impossibilities, such would be... acceptable, if not expected. Still fragments and so-called memory linger.

...Lay quietly. Find the shadow's stretch, o fallen.

[The words are harshly scratched into the page - her brush is her claws, her ink is her blood.]

To my knowledge, you are dead.

[There is a significant pause before words appear, again.]

Light and dark linger together, in divide, on graves as well as anywhere. Waste not your blood onto page, if healing is your intention. And linger, if health be of your mind.

Light is supposedly the life force, after all.

[My, my, this certainly was a sight to be seen. Waka walks lazily on the waves and sand, arms folded in his billowing sleeves. He takes care to stay out of her immediate reach, body poised to remove his katana and strike if need be.]

Tsk, tsk...not so wily after all, hm, madam fox?

[Waka circles around her heaving body, inspecting the damage dealt by the mother lupine goddess. He frowns a little. Something inside him was nagging. His compassionate side to help the poor beast was waging war on his rationality, insisting he rend the demon fox's head from her shoulders now. The beast was in essence a plague unto Ryoshima. Still, that was not the reason he wanted so badly to slay the beast now. No...there was another, deeper, more personal reason.

Vengeance.]

[The fox's ears twitch at the soft footfalls upon the sand - exhausted as she is, helpless as she is, her senses are as sharp as ever, and she slowly lifts her bloody, aching head to watch Waka's movements. At first her gaze is clouded, unseeing, dulled with pain. But then it sharpens as recognition sinks in - this is the leader of those foolish troopers, the esteemed captain of Himiko's guard, the blond man her master sought.

A low, weak growling begins in her chest. Her single red eye absolutely blazes with rage and hatred. But, if Waka would care to look, he might see a shred of fear - not of death, but what death would bring: the shattering of her lifelong self-delusion of perfection. A fear only death, not defeat, could realize. Regardless, there's no mistaking the complete and utter lack of remorse in that one demonic pupil. Silently, she summons her remaining strength, ready to attack if he should stray within her immediate range.]

Beast.

[Waka spits, hand aching to reach for his sword, more so than ever when he sees the...what was it--satisfaction?--burning in that one eye. His teeth clench together behind pursed lips and, quick as only the Tao Master can be, he lunges forward and drives his blade into the demon fox's shoulder, then out again. Waka jumps back before the monster could truly grasp what had happened, breathing heavily.

...That was enough. He couldn't kill it. Still, that was enough. His hand shakes and he snarls himself, plunging his beautiful sword into the water, wiping clean the blood.]

Fox of nine tails... Know this. And know it well. I will allow you to live - for now. But...if you so much as bat that single eye of yours towards an innocent again, I will reign down a fury upon you that neither heaven nor earth has ever seen.

[Her heavy breathing sharpens instantly and she fights the urge to roar out her pain, the exquisite red-hot agony setting all the other forgotten hurts aflare - no, she grapples with it, corners it, pins that urge and kills it dead. Weak she may be, near-death she may be, but her pride is still strong, her anger is neverending, and now she staggers to her paws by sheer strength of will. Snarling, ears pulled back, battered and broken tail forcing its way into the air (an old trick to make herself seem larger, the effect is much grander with nine tails), Ninetails speaks. Her voice is at first low and whispery but quickly galvanizes into a loud, demanding bellow.]

....you...make demands of me? You....threaten me? Do you...even know- who you are dealing with?! YOU THINK THAT YOU KNOW FURY? YOU THINK THAT YOU KNOW POWER? YOU KNOW NOTHING AND YOU CANNOT STOP ME! YOU CAN NEVER STOP ME! I CRUSHED THE WATER DRAGON, I MURDERED YOUR FOOLISH QUEEN, I LED THAT CITY ASTRAY AND YOU COULD DO NOTHING! YOU ARE NOTHING ( ... )
