You're supposed to help the students? I had no idea! It's probably a good thing for a generation of history students that I didn't get my Ph.D.

Keep thinking on it. Maybe you'll find another switch that'll be the 'perfect explanation' :) I know there will probably be a number of students that will thank you for it, and a vast majority that will never notice...

But you'll know.

Maybe telling the students this might help them feel less than helpless and more inclined to listen to your awesome wisdom. :)

Actually, I have a similar degree and I don't think I could teach general chemistry. :( So, you are da smart!

Btw, is this a tenure-track job?

The one I'm at? Sadly, no. It's a sabbatical replacement gig: I'm only here for a year, while someone is on sabbatical. It's getting me the teaching experience I need, though. Well, conceivably it's getting me the experience I need. Like I suggested in today's post, though, it's not like other schools are beating down the door to offer me a job.

And I think you'd be surprised -- a whole lot of stuff comes back to you unexpectedly when you start having to teach it.
