The Bushies don't understand that all those rules about fair trials and no torture aren't there to protect the badguys, but to protect us from becoming what we're fighting.

I read this somewhere, but I don't remember where and I don't remember the exact quote so I'm paraphrasing, but:

It's arrogance. The arrogance that we can pick and choose when to apply these rules and rights, because "we're smart". What kind of example does it set for these emerging democracies we're trying to help along? None.
