Unfortunately red&green are associated with CHRISTMAS for most westerners, I think. :D

In a design sense, complementary colors are anything BUT complimentary! Yuk!

It's all in the shading. Royal purple and deep gold can go well. So can dark blue and brilliant gold. Red and green, well, you'll have to go earthtones.

"Complementary" means when you mix the two colors together, they form grey. :D
