Fundamentalist Atheist.

Could that work?

People who wave it around like it makes them smarter, better, wiser, more evolved or something.

It's just as annoying as people who shove tracts of their faith in your face.

I don't think anything like that "works"

Most human beings feel the need to believe in something. It comforts them to have that.
But many believe it so strongly that they think everyone should believe it too. And that they are superior for it.

Politics, religion, even smaller things like art and culture.

"You don't think the way I do, so you're wrong"

These are the people who cause the problems in the world, the ones who will not open their minds.

How DARE YOU OKIE making fun of "us" atheists...."you shall surely go to uh er what a minute...ok I got it you shall surely go to a Madona concert and see her wrinkles up close... there you go". Just kidding I am a bent baptist. I once debated an atheist on a sci fi chat for eight LONGGGGGGG years. She just could not leave me alone since I was the lone baptist on the board. Yes it happens...there are many "free thinking atheists" who lawd their conclusions on life as the only ones. I think God will treat atheists like baptists who go to heaven...he ropes us off in our own little corner because we think we are the only ones there. "Fundamental atheists" are roped off in their own little null set of emptiness.

anyone shoving anything in your face is annoying, it seems that humans are inherently broken in that way, we don't seem able to seperate what people think from how they think, no matter how much you rationalise it, I know when I find out someone is a devout follower of any theistic faith, deep down inside of me a little tiny part thinks 'oh no.....'

I'm fairly sure it happens with everyone else, just the way the brain is wired it would seem! just as you get irritating athiests like Richard Dawkins, who seems hell bent on winning the 'biggest arsehole in the world' award, you get pitying looks from the christians who say in their most condescending voice possible 'I'll pray for you'

let's all just stand up and admit that as humans, we are hugely flawed, we all piss each other off and can't even understand why most of the time....

I am a Christian, but in everyday conversation with people it doesn't come up a lot. Mostly, because it doesn't have to. People who aren't interested, aren't interested.

If it does come up, I'll mention it, and I'll provide clarification of some misinformation, or help out with some ideas that are inaccurate, then it disappears again.

When it does come up, suddenly people start making HUGE assumptions about me and how I think. Then there are those who take the opportunity to point and laugh. um...ok. I'm not dumb, not stupid, do indeed have a brain, didn't turn it off to read the bible. It happens to make sense to me.

You do as you want. That walk is yours. Mine is over here. Just don't tell me I'm stupid for it. I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone.

well, I think that as a christian people are bound to make assumptions about you, I would assume (based on my experiences and knowledge of the christian faith) that you disagree on some level with Abortion, pre-marital sex, and homosexuality. As well as thinking that people who follow other faiths are going to hell when they die. You may not ram it down people's throats and I'm glad for that because you're certainly smart enough to realise that avenue goes nowhere good, but I think I can guess (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that for example, you are generally opposed to the idea of gay couples adopting?

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong or bad about that either, I feel as humans we are predisposed to thinking that we are always right, so anyone with a contrary point of view must be wrong. It's very rare to find a person who can look at both sides of an argument in a completely impartial, neutral fasion..... unfortunately!

oh and just thought I'd mention that an atheist can't really be a fundamentalist, as there are no fundamentals of the athiest "faith" so to speak, no scripture, no rigid structure, no organisation. It's also not really the sort of system with beliefs which don't agree with modern and social society.

I think too many people have used fundamentalist in a bad way thanks to our buddies over in the taliban, and now people just assume a fundamentalist is someone who looks down on others, and I'm not sure that's the case at all. :)

I don't think all atheists are fundamentalist atheists, just as not all muslims are fundamentalists like the Taliban.

There are indeed basic beliefs:
1. People who aren't atheist are less evolved than people who are.
2. People who aren't atheists not as reasonable or rational as people who are.

yes but those beliefs aren't held by all atheists, and you dont have to believe them to be an atheist, therefore they aren't fundamental.

there are basic beliefs but they're more around the whole 'no god' type deal....

Let me alter your words slightly.

yes but those beliefs aren't held by all Muslims, and you dont have to believe them to be a Muslim, therefore they aren't fundamental.
