Tranz-Alpine railway a great introduction to NZ mountainscapes. Stayed at the poshest hostel (felt more like a small hunting lodge, complete with guy writing a novel and reading Kerouac by the log fire.) I've been at - Global Village - and free bikes

Happy to have you stay here with us, impending visitor is a few days/week away yet, so the spare room is yours for the taking, as I mentioned on the phone.

How are you getting to Wellington, as Liz will have the car and can pick you up from the airport/ferry when you arrive, then you don't have to worry about the trains and stuff.
