"Submit something for publication" --- what's your field?

I write fiction, a bit of creative nonfiction, too. I don't know what I'd submit yet--an essay or a short story or something. Last year my creative nonfiction prof told me she'd work with me on one of my pieces because she thought I should submit it, so I might work on that one. No definite plans, just a goal. :)
