Endless Bummer

Remember how I raved about seeing Mike Daisey's Invincible Summer? Well, last week something pretty terrible happened at one of his performances...

From his website:
Last night's performance of INVINCIBLE SUMMER was disrupted when eighty seven members of a Christian group walked out of the show en masse, and chose to ( Read more... )

isn't that daisey shit ridiculous? someone at the stranger blog commented that this is exactly what the pre-nazis would do at cultural events and to artists in germany in the 20's and 30's.

Children of Men was one of the best movies I've seen this year! I don't know what you're talking about, lady!

I thought it was terrible. I was SO ready to like it. It was a total gimme and it failed.

I thought it sucked horribly. Way too incoherent.

Children of Men...I was mixed on it initially, but overall for a Hollywood movie, I thought it did a decent job. Cinematography was amazing, but the script was so *weak.* The book did a much better job of explicating the themes and intertwining the story. I thought where the movie was strongest in capturing the "mood" of war/breaking down the impact of war on innocents...visually it took you (as viewer) into a war zone (made primarily of people of color) and the realism and comparison to modern day events was really on my mind when I was watching it. It wasn't the best apocalyptic sci-fi film in creation, but thematically it hit some good notes. Oh, and I thought it captured radical activist culture pretty good too, lol.

I didnt think of it as being very Hollywood, it felt like a big indie to me but you could be right...

I felt like it was a bad action/sci fi film. About 75% of the film was people dodging bullets against a grey background. While watching all the poor crying "fugees" all I could think about was that episode of Extras with Ben Stiller where they are trying to sort out how best to look like suffering poor people. It is such a vulgar parade. If I never see a dramatization of a poor huddled mass of refugees or internees or anything it will be too soon.

Yeah there were some funny activist culture moments, but I am still firmly solidly committed to saying that it sucked.

I read about Invincible Summer on BoingBoing... And my one co-worker wonders why I don't like the fundies of Campus Crusade at the college I work at. That shit is awful and wrong. ARGH!

I don't even understand what caused the big hubbub. It wasn't the standard "pray in school/stay in the closet/dont have an abortion/instead send your poor and unwanted baby to war/ because science is bad and God created everything" line. Even after Mike talked to the ringleader he stll didn't get a clear answer.

Christians like this make Christians like me bang our heads against brick walls in frustration.

Christians like that made me not want to be a Christian anymore (in addition to other things, but finding out about them helped with my decision to stop being one).
