it's times like these when I feel like we are living the biggest joke of a culture ever. Plenty of almost-naked ladies and sex jokes eVERYwhere, huge teenage pregnancy, STD, porn culture.. yet this totally tame ad can't fly. It's weird though, I feel like I have seen totally steamy ads for Trojan before? Maybe it was just on MTV or out of the country or something.
I think it is Durex with the steamy ads actually. There's a funny one here.
I agree with you, this culture is a joke. Totally the kind of candy without sugar mentality Zizek always goes on about. Unfortunately the joke has deadly reprecussions. So (as my Moz says) the joke isn't funny anymore.
Yeah I don't like the anthropomorphism either and I think the whole commercial and everything it is predicated on (HEY LADEEEZ! I AM HAVING CON DOM IN POCKET. NOW YOU WILL CONSIDERING HAVING SEXY WITH ME, YES?) but I appreciate the sentiment. Ahhhhh the sentiment.
And actually I am looking for someone (someone famouser powerful-er than I) to issue the "Hey condoms suck! Scientist dudes can we come up with better prophylactics, please?" rallying cry. But it seems unlikely. So for now I am supporting the condom lobby.
did I add you? ddi you add me? whoever did, it was a great ideakdollarsignJuly 18 2007, 02:38:40 UTC
it's just not a very good commercial. not particularly offensive OR effective. sort of odd, actually. This is a fascinating quote, though:
Michael Weinstein, president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, said, adding, "The big problem in this country is we're hedonistic in our behavior and moralistic in our attitudes. We don't have an open discussion about our sexuality, and the price of not being open is millions of sexually transmitted infections"
