Taking down Christmas, one piece at a time

I observed our National Day of Mourning yesterday by putting away my Christmas things. Well, except for the lights on the front porch. I'll leave them until 12th Night. And the poinsettia my brother gave me, since he's coming over this weekend I won't pitch it yet (I can keep them going forever, but lack the facilities to bring it back into bloom ( Read more... )

Reminds me of the stuff we had when I was small...the Santa from Germany that was totally decripit, but too sacred to throw away, the Christmas cards that hung from ribbons on the tree when there wasn't enough money to buy enough ornaments to fill the tree, which of course had to be tall enough to reach the ceiling...the tinsel that was made out of aluminum and taken off and stored for the next year....who would want a tasteful and coordinated Christmas?

I have a childless friend who remakes her Christmas look - one year its snipped tin lobsters all over the tree and the next year no tree but greens and white candles all over the house, this year she did tree again with lots of multicolor lights. My children expect the same stuff in the same place every year, they are always happy to add MORE but eliminating any item requires deep thought.
